The application for the 2024 summer research fellowship has not opened yet.

About the Fellowship

Since 2021, we’ve offered a research fellowship to talented students or early-career professionals interested in research work in global catastrophic risk (GCR) mitigation. In the 2023 research fellowship, fellows will get the opportunity to spend eight weeks in Geneva, Switzerland, conducting a research project on the mitigation of global catastrophic risks — including pandemics, nuclear catastrophes, transformative artificial intelligence, and extreme climate change. Fellows will work alongside like-minded individuals and receive mentoring from experienced academics.

As a fellow, you will benefit from:

  • the opportunity to work on global catastrophic risk mitigation

  • engaging with like-minded fellows as well as researchers and policymakers with lots of experience in the field

  • mentorship to guide your thinking on these important topics

  • a unique opportunity to enjoy a summer set in the beautiful scenery of Switzerland!

Fellows will also receive a $5,500 stipend, free accommodation, a shared office, and travel expense support.

Past Fellows

We provide resources, networks, and strong mentorship. Past fellows have pursued a variety of impactful careers in AI governance, technical AI research, biosecurity, and more.

  • “The fellowship allowed me to develop my thinking on a concrete topic in the AI security space, with tailored guidance from a responsive and knowledgeable mentor (whom I still look to for advice today!). The experience also supported my career development by giving me the space and feedback to better evaluate where my strengths lie; the types of skills I would like to develop; and a better understanding of the kinds of AI research/policy roles I would like to explore.”

  • “The CHERI program had a profound impact on the direction of my research and career. Beyond the production of research outputs, the CHERI program was essential in my preparation and attendance at the Biological Weapon Convention 9th Review Conference. It also enabled me to meet local think tanks, with whom I am still frequently in contact.”
