We just reached the $1M ARR milestone 🔥

Hi all!

We just reached a major milestone of $1M ARR with Plausible Analytics, a simple, lightweight, open source and privacy-friendly alternative to Google Analytics! How crazy is that!? 🔥🤯 🥳

$1M ARR

Plausible was launched right here on Indie Hackers and it's been a wild ride so far:

$0 to $400 MRR in 12 months
$400 to $10k MRR in 9 months
$10k to $41,6k MRR in 10 months
$41,6k to $83,3k MRR in 8 months

We're completely independent, self-funded and bootstrapped. We're intentionally small, profitable and sustainable. We still don't have any paid advertising budget either.

VCs recommend cost cutting and layoffs? We're 100% funded by our subscribers so we don't care what VCs say. Earlier this year we hired Cenk to improve our infrastructure so we're now a team of four. Now we're looking for the fifth team member to help us improve the product.

We do our best but sometimes you need to be lucky to be at the right place at the right time. A couple of big things that happened recently that really helped us:

  1. Austrian and French Data Protection Authorities decided that the use of Google Analytics violates the GDPR

  2. Google announced they'll kill Universal Analytics next year and that there's no way to import your historical stats to the new GA4

It's exciting times to be a European, privacy-focused web analytics project that has an import tool that allows you to bring your old Google Analytics stats. We also have a realtime dashboard and a landing pages report which are two things that many GA users are unhappy about.

Thanks all for your trust and support! ❤️

Congratulations! As a co-founder of an early stage startup, this is really inspiring!

    1. 1

glad to hear that Goncalo, thanks!

  2. 3

    CONGRATS!!!

    The best part is this:

"We're completely independent, self-funded and bootstrapped. We're intentionally small, profitable and sustainable. We still don't have any paid advertising budget either."

^ My company just reached 500k ARR, so we'll be following in your footsteps. Congrats! :)

    1. 2

thank Alex! and congrats to you too! :)

  3. 3

I always say that customers are your REAL investors.

They are the ones who will put money into your startup & also help you in improving it.

Nowadays, seeing many startups focusing on valuations & not on creating value for their customers is really painful.

Your startups should only focus on creating significant value for your users & your valuations will automatically get increased.

Marko, I love what you are doing.

    Keep doing & grinding.

The journey is a long dude.

Best of luck to the whole team.

    1. 3

agree! thanks for the kind words! appreciate it!

  4. 3

What a headline to read after not being on IH for the last few months. CONGRATULATIONS!

  6. 3

This is super inspiring, huge congrats! Super well deserved! 👏

  7. 3

Congrats. Out of curiosity do you have a link to one of your first successful posts here on indiehackers, when you were launching? Do you have a recommendation on how to craft a good quality launch post?

    1. 3

thanks! here's our IH profile: https://www.indiehackers.com/product/plausible-insights. you can read starting from the oldest post...

  8. 3

    That’s great, congratulations!!

  9. 2

Thanks for the product! I use it daily for my new websites.
The only thing that stops me from moving completely to Plausible is a lack of support for Electron apps and Browser extensions.
Anyway, it is a great bootstrapping example. Good luck!

    1. 1

thanks for the kind words Denis! would something like our events API work for those use cases? https://plausible.io/docs/events-api

      1. 1

@markosaric thanks for the link, I missed that option somehow. I will definitely give it a try

  10. 2

This makes me even more confident that small but efficient teams can outpace the big companies.

    Keep it going, @markosaric!

    1. 1

anything is possible! thank you Alexander!

  11. 2

Great work, so good to see your persistence pay off. I love seeing OG indie hackers make it big like this. Well done and see you guys at $10M ARR!

  12. 2

That's unbelievable. I thought it's impossible to compete with Google Analytics.

Nice dynamic after the first 12 months.

    Congrats!

    1. 1

thank you! it can be done!

  13. 2

Congrats! Just signed up and added to my product in <20 minutes. Loving it so far.

    1. 1

    1. 1

thank you! and wish you the best of luck too!

  15. 2

@markosaric wow, congrats, that's a big milestone indeed!!! Using plausible over a year now and it's a great tool 😊

how do you see the development with the new privacy shield? will a give Google and Co again a solid foundation to build on or do you think it will be like the old privacy shield and only buys a bit of time until an european court decides that it's against EU law?

    1. 2

thank you Matthias! from what i see, the NOYB people are not impressed with the new proposal so i don't see much future for it... but let's see what happens...

  16. 2

Woooow!!! I thought it was going to be another clickbait from a lead gen agency, but I saw one of my favorite tools here. Great job Marko, have been with you since Autumn. Like simplicity in your product and how quickly you respond to questions.

    1. 1

      appreciate that Denis, thank you!

  17. 2

This is huge 🥳 I remember watching you launch the early version across IHers. It's been amazing watching this pan out!

  18. 2

Congratulations! That's amazing, excellent work and best of luck with the future!

  19. 2

Congratulations on the awesome results !

  20. 2

Huge achievement! Congratulations, Marco. Can you check your Twitter DMs once you get a chance?

    1. 2

    1. 2

thank you! and wish you the best of luck!

  23. 2

An ethically positive company that succeeds, it's beautiful to see. Thank you for existing, you're the kind of example that is very much needed.

    1. 1

thanks Gui! appreciate the kind words!

  24. 2

I recall checking it out when you first started. Congrats!

  25. 2

    Congratulations and great work!

  26. 2

Congratulations Marko, That's a Huge Milestone!!

Loved the idea. its better to pay and secure our data rather than putting our data out there in the name of free

    1. 2

      thanks, appreciate that!

  27. 2

I've used Plausible for a while. Great service! I found I didn't need half the bells and whistles I thought I needed from GA. The biggest draw for me was it being privacy-focused.

    1. 1

glad to hear that, thank you!

  28. 2

Love the concept ! Congrats guys ! How did you get the idea i am so curious to know more about your business journey. Did you created that website yourself ?

    1. 1

thanks Hana, appreciate it! my co-founder started developing on his own as he felt there was a need for a better GA alternative. i then joined him about a year into it. we've tried to share many of the stories and lessons learned along the way on our blog. see https://plausible.io/blog

  29. 2

👏👏👏 Really well done!! That's a huge milestone!

You guys are killing it and I can totally see why! I love using Plausible for my sites ❤️

    1. 1

thank you Sam, glad you're finding Plausible useful!

  30. 1

Looks like after this milestone you decided to ditch IH. Eh, sad. But it's common.

    1. 1

didn't really ditch IH. been on the IH podcast recently https://share.transistor.fm/s/e981d95e

  31. 1

Super impressive --I'd love to have you on my Podcast. Takes 15-20 min, features thought leaders like yourself..... Interested?

  32. 1

That's the type of story that makes me gets me proud!! Awesome job Marko and the other 3 members, it is so cool to see companies get where you are without vc money and a responsible and sustainable growth. You must feel very proud. COngrats

    1. 1

thanks for the kind words, appreciate that!

  33. 1

Great to hear you are growing so fast! I borrowed your concept of hashing IPs with a daily non recoverable salt, for a analytics solution for my own app. I tried Plausible, but it was unfortunately not really geared to app analytics. I now use Influx for stats, which is perfectly fine for a single app, but not scalable at all ;) Anyway, I am a big fan and hope you will continue to have success!

  34. 1

This is incredible. Thank you for sharing your journey.

Aside from the timing of the industry and privacy changes, what would you say is your edge?

Also, (not to come off as rude or anything) isn't 40-50/hr for a mid-senior engineer a bit low? (speaking as a USA based Sr. engineer who's on the look out for solid part time work)

    1. 2

      thanks!

we're open source, lightweight, simple to use and don't use any cookies either. you can find a more detailed comparison here: https://plausible.io/vs-google-analytics

i think US salaries are much higher than EU salaries due to FB/Google etc. salary we offer is very competitive for European standards. VC-backed like salaries are out of our reach at the moment unfortunately as we're small and bootstrapped

  35. 1

Happy to know that, Congratulations sir.

  36. 1

    Hey,

Wao such a huge and great achievement buddy https://techstribe.com/block-facebook-video-ads/ really impressed with your progress.

    Cheers.

  37. 1

    Congratulations!

    Great write up too

  38. 1

any word on churn? with a $13 ARPU how are you managing to retain your customers?

    1. 2

we don't really do much about churn or retention. we focus on delivering a product people find useful and if they like it they continue. if they don't find it useful they leave. we don't try to prevent that in any way. there's an easy one click cancel and we even send an email few days before a renewal telling them that they can cancel ahead of time in case they don't need us
