While the news cycle will be focused on Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel, let's keep our focus on Gaza. Gaza is still being bombed and starved. In the North of Gaza: Zain was the sole survivor of his family when an Israeli strike leveled his house. He was just 12 years old but was subjected to the forced starvation. He tried to retrieve air-dropped aid but the aid box fell on him. Zain was in critical condition for 2 days until he succumbed to his injuries. He was planning to escape from Gaza with his uncle and grandad when they reached their GoFundMe target. Wouldn't it be amazing if train travel within the UK got an extra boost because noone had the choice of taking a super short haul flight any more? As an example, London to Edinburgh is 4.5 hours by train. You can get to the station five minutes before departure, and go direct from one city centre to the other. To fly, you have to escape London and get to an airport (1 hour), arrive way ahead of your departure time (1 hour), fly (1.5 hours), get off the plane, retrieve your backs, and get into Edinburgh (1 hour). A flight is £22 and a train ticket £50 (booked three months in advance). Flying emits approx 150kgCO2e, taking the train only 20kgCO2e. If the alarm bells are ringing during this climate emergency, then why would we encourage people to fly? Why not help the train routes to thrive, bringing prices down, and slashing our transport emissions? I've signed the petition below because I would like to see this topic debated by politicians.
