Vilnius Council approves increase in public transport fares

On Wednesday, Vilnius City Council approved an increase in public transport fares that will take effect on July 1.

The proposal was approved with 28 votes in favour and 20 against.

An updated ticket pricing was presented at the council meeting on Wednesday. It includes scrapping the 30-minute ticket and a smaller increase in ticket prices compared to the initial proposal.

Once the new prices come into force, a 60-minute ticket will cost €1.25, a one-day ticket €7.5, a three-day ticket €13.5, a one-month ticket €38, a three-month ticket €110, and an annual ticket €405.

New tickets will also be introduced, including a family ticket and tickets for different group sizes.

All the existing discounts will remain in place under the current system.

Plans to almost double the price of public transport tickets were met with considerable opposition from Vilnius residents. As a result, some proposals were adjusted and replaced with smaller price increases.

According to the municipality, passengers will be able to use the old-denomination public transport tickets purchased in advance until September 30 this year.

From October 1, the old tickets will no longer be valid, but until December 31 passengers will be able to return them to the customer service centres of the municipality’s company Susisiekimo Paslaugos or exchange them for new tickets at a surcharge.

The public transport ticket prices in Vilnius were last revised in 2013.
