Yahoo is amplifying the role of creators in its business with Yahoo for Creators. This new creator program empowers creators to publish, monetize, and expand their audiences by sharing articles across the Yahoo News network, which boasts over 185 million monthly U.S. visitors. ▶ Here's how it works: Creators will have access to a suite of tools to publish and track the performance of their content. They’ll also have the opportunity to earn revenue from their stories, including a 50/50 revenue split for ad placements and an 80/20 revenue split for affiliate links. These stories will be integrated alongside Yahoo's traditional news content from its in-house journalists and publisher partners but tagged with a 'Yahoo Creator' label. Surprisingly, creators don't have to pitch stories and retain the freedom to post at their discretion as long as they adhere to Yahoo's guidelines. The program is launching with 21 hand-selected creators, including Amber Kemp-Gerstel, and is open to others who meet specific eligibility criteria: 📈 Having at least 1K followers across platforms like Medium, Substack, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube 📝 Producing written content with a unique perspective across key categories, including fashion, beauty, home, technology, and travel. ▶ What it means: Yahoo's move reflects its adaptation to the evolving media landscape, where audiences, including younger demographics such as Gen Z, increasingly rely on creators for news and information. By establishing a network of creators, Yahoo can cater to these audiences while expanding its coverage to feature more lifestyle-focused topics. For creators, this presents an opportunity to collaborate with one of the industry's major players, leveraging Yahoo's extensive network to reach new audiences and earn meaningful revenue through creator-friendly revenue-sharing models. ▶ Why it matters: The launch of Yahoo for Creators features several emerging trends, notably the growing integration of creators and their content alongside traditional publishers and media outlets. This has been coming to life in many ways, from platforms like YouTube making it easy for viewers to find content from their favorite creators alongside premium streaming content to brands launching creator programs that make creators an extension of their talent pools. For example, along similar lines to Yahoo for Creators, a few months ago, Allure Magazine launched the Allure Creators Network, which provided a curated group of creators with the same credentialing as its in-house writers and beauty experts. There are so many more examples and there will continue to be more examples in the future as creators continue to drive impact. I think this is a great initiative in theory, but I have to wonder whether people will want to read blog-style content. With the massive shift to video content, people just don’t consume content in the same way anymore, with their go-tos being social-first platforms. As someone who has worked in both new and traditional media, I hope it works out for Yahoo and for the creators. And who knows, maybe this will spur a renaissance for written and longer form content. Only time will tell.
This could be pretty cool, as Yahoo still drives a lot of traffic. Is it a growing property though? 🤔
Nice! This reminded me of a Yahoo TV partnership back in 2013 when I started Viddsee, our creator platform for filmmakers. And we could bring our short films and editorial on Yahoo editorial pages across US and Asia and it was awesome! Didn’t know the platform is still running well with so many visitor still!
This is AWESOME! But more importantly, when do I get more awesome Lindsey <> Peter 1 on 1 time?!
Does this new feature concern all territories ? Or just the USA ? Thanks Lindsey
Any links on how others can apply?
This is news to me man, thanks for sharing Lindsey
With trends leaning back towards longer form content I think this is an excellent opportunity for content creators!
Yahoo's recognition of the value of creators is a key move in the evolving media landscape.
