Vancouver metal mavens Hyperia are officially releasing their caustic, riff-heavy sophomore record Silhouettes of Horror — one of Exclaim!'s most anticipated albums of 2022 — tomorrow (March 18). But today, Exclaim! has an exclusive early stream of the album, which you can check out below in all its hair-swinging, teeth-gnashing glory.
The Calgary-bred, Vancouver-based four piece specialize in the kind of wild-eyed, mind-melting metal that, crucially, isn't afraid to inject a bit of fun — Silhouettes of Horror features a cover of ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme" — into their pitch-black riffage.
"The album is mostly about government experiments, greed, and conspiracies," says vocalist Marlee Ryley. "But also about sleep disorders, because I have suffered from them since childhood and because of that it was an easy theme to write about."
The album is a continuation of the madness reached on 2020's Insanitorium, featuring the relentless momentum of opener "Hypnagogia," the rapid-fire attack of single "Operation Midnight" and the deep-night anthem that is "Prisoner of the Mind."
Produced and mixed by guitarist Colin Ryley and mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, Silhouettes of Horror features friend and session drummer Gord Alexander, while its nightmare-fuel album artwork is courtesy of Andrei Bouzikov.
