Men in PR. What do you think?🤔 We found this an interesting read from PRWeek UK, and one which makes some very valid points. There are definitely some issues in our industry that disproportionately impact specific groups – such as suicide and paternity leave — and we wholeheartedly support any group led by passionate people looking to raise awareness and instigate change. That said, do we need a group called #MeninPR? When arguably the industry has been men in PR for too long candidly? The reason Women in PR was founded over 60 years ago – and continues to exist – is because there are issues that were not being addressed and have still not been satisfactorily tackled. Issues such as women reaching senior roles, bullying and intimidation, not to mention the #genderpaygap. We may be the majority in our industry, but we’ve historically been treated as a minority. We’d love to see more men get involved in our campaigns as allies especially on issues of parental leave, for example. We also concur that issues such as burnout, mental health, ageism or building confidence cut across gender lines and there’s merit in coming together to advocate for change. Did you miss last Saturday’s event? If you did, you missed as #SOuL was graced with two very passionate and experienced advocates for over 2 hours sharing their stories but also strategies of what worked, what’s working and what could be the way forward. Key phrases and words that stood out for us was: 🩸When discussing or advocating for #SickleCell or #Disability - ✅ Focus on “the Can Dos not Can’t Dos - John McDonald ✅Resilience is the ability to fight while running - Biba TINGA Key words included - #Unity #Collaboration #Voice #Power #Modelling #Benifit Finding #Disability #Language Some of the context they were used included the acknowledgment of - ✔️ Sickle Cell as a disability yet the need for strength to survive and even thrive with sickle cell often makes it difficult for People Living With Sickle Cell (nicknamed Warriors) to identify as People Living With A Disability. Also, the negative conotation often associated with disability including the additional burden it tends to imply further makes “Warriors” shun the term. Hence, language and how it is used especially to talk about disability in society or even when advocating for oneself or others was also discussed. ✔️The wins but also the opportunities being lost because of disunity within the #SickleCellSpace. It was suggested the way forward was not only to #Unite but also #Collaborate within and without the sickle cell space so that we talk with one voice but also find and use every opportunity available to get our voice heard but also ensure the main aim of improving the lives of People Living With Sickle Cell everywhere is realised. ☑️ The power we have in the #SickleCellCommunity. When we add the numbers of every person affected by sickle cell even without future projections, we form a very large piece of the world. When use well, we have the power to influence policies but also ensure the right policies are created to enable not only survival of a Person With Sickle but also ensuring they have full and meaningful lives accessing everything like every one else. We are hiring! While intimate partner violence is a highly gendered crime with well-documented health impacts on women and children, less has been said about the health impacts of the administrative and legal processes designed to support victims/survivors of this type of violence. There is growing concern and evidence that the use of the concept of “parental alienation” in family courts has resulted in harm to mothers and children, especially those already exposed to family violence. The Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI), The World Bank Group , UNICEF Innocenti and World Health Organization are joining efforts to generate evidence that can inform ongoing debates around the impacts of family court proceedings on women’s and children’s health and well-being in the context of violence in the home and on the use of the concept of “parental alienation” in associated processes. The SVRI is seeking a consultant or consultants to undertake a review of the existing evidence on this issue.
