Unshackled: A Camille Delaney Mystery (A Camille Delaney Mystery, 3) Paperback – February 4, 2025
Purchase options and add-ons
Camille Delaney returns with another investigation―and this time it’s personal.
Shackled to her bed against the pleas of the medical staff, Charli Zhao gives birth to a beautiful daughter she names Willow. Charli had been transported to the hospital from prison, where she is serving time for a crime she didn’t commit. Within hours of the birth, the unthinkable happens: the newborn is abducted, leaving Charli devastated and wondering if she’ll ever find her child, even after she gets free.
Attorney Camille Delaney isn’t used to the inside of women’s prisons―she works in courtrooms. But when a local legal aid group recruits her to help with a case on the inside, she feels drawn to these women’s stories. They are often so similar―a lifetime of trauma culminating in the heartbreaking and often permanent loss of custody of their children, even after they’ve served their time and gotten clean.
When Camille meets Charli, it’s been years since Willow was abducted, and the case has gone cold. But there’s something about Charli’s story―and Charli herself―that Camille can’t refuse. With the help of her trusted friend and private investigator Trish Seaholm, Camille begins a dogged pursuit to find Charli’s daughter and bring the man who framed Charli to justice. As Camille’s quest for the truth takes her team from Seattle to the San Juan Islands to the mountains of Olympic National Park, she must reckon with a system that routinely dismisses the rights of convicted mothers―and has their children pay the price.

“[A] cracking, fast-paced legal thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.”―Kristin Hannah, author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers The Nightingale and The Four Winds
“‘Page-turner’ hardly does it justice! The Complication has everything: accomplished nurse/lawyer/pilot Camille Delaney as a brainy sleuth with a bevy of bold women helping her; a murderous surgeon with victims everywhere; gorgeous Pacific Northwest scenery; medical and legal drama—and suspense that Just. Won’t. Quit. Whew! What a ride!”―Eric Redman, author of Bones of Hilo and The Dance of Legislation
“Nothing is quite as it seems in this taut medicolegal thriller by lawyer-turned-author Amanda DuBois. With a kickass female divorce attorney hell-bent on finding the truth and seeking justice when her friend bleeds out on the operating table, this is an engrossing read with twists and turns on every page.”―Annette Clark, MD, JD, dean of Seattle University School of Law
“Amanda DuBois weaves a wonderful tale of suspense. Highly recommend this book!”―Shon Hopwood, author of Law Man
“As a retired justice of the Washington Supreme Court, I’ve seen the mysteries of justice and injustice, but not with the excitement DuBois has created. Hang on for an exciting landing.”—Faith Ireland, retired justice, Washington Supreme Court
“Thrilling and appalling, just how we like them. A definite page-turner, but keep the lights on. Amanda DuBois sparkles in her debut novel.”―Skye Moody, author of the Venus Diamond series

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025The latest installment in the Camille Delaney mystery series hits home. Literally. I grew up and attended Gig Harbor High School (which is less than a mile from the Women's Prison featured in this book). I go to the town of Port Angeles at least four times a year to visit my favorite indy bookstore (shoutout to Port Books and News) to buy books in physical form...all of that is to say that the reality that is portrayed in this book is unabashedly real.
The plight of the characters is real. If I were to have any criticism of this book is that it was too real. I had to put the book down and step away because taking it all in at once would have been too much. But that's the point of a great author. She tells a story that is fictional, but yet I would venture to guess that every reader will be able to connect on one or multiple levels - and that may make people uncomfortable.
Despite the realism and the inward look at my own life, the twists and turns were completely unanticipated. If you like legal dramas and mysteries. If you like reading fictionalized accounts of reality. I cannot recommend this book enough. Get it now!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025Amanda Dubois has done it again! This is the best of the 3 she’s written, but read the first two 1st to gain insight into Camille Delaney, the lawyer in these stories. Dubois develops this story with much suspense and intrigue! It’s very educational with insight into women’s trauma and how they end up incarcerated, with very little or no help to turn their lives around! I love that the proceeds of these books are being donated to help them end the cycle of their abuse and addiction. Lots of factual information and great insight into the prison system. Great ending and a must read!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2025I've looked forward to every Camille Delaney mystery since the first one, and Unshackled is the best so far. Her characters and their relationships are rich, fraught, compelling. The mystery is taught, and the threads come together in surprising and satisfying ways, It's a cracking good mystery, hard to put down. Most powerfully, it shines a light on the issue - and the business - of addiction and the devastating legal consequences for mothers. Dubois' characters illuminate a path out.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025This is the third in a series and while I devoured all of the books, this is the best. It's a fast-paced thriller set in the Pacific Northwest with badass women as the key characters. What I love about Amanda DuBois's books is that, while fiction, they shine a light on the injustices in the legal system. This one is centered around incarcerated women and the challenges they face trying to be reunited with their children when they leave prison. Her writing is informed by real women and their experiences. More please Amanda!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2025I have not read the other books in the series, but this one read well as a standalone. I liked the focus on the broken system and the mother/child dynamic that is affected because of it. The reader is given a lot of information and facts regarding those topics, but it was easy to follow and understand. I loved getting the different perspectives as Camilla and Trish help not only Charli but other women as well. The mystery was done well and I found the ending to be emotional.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025As a member of a social justice book club, I was deeply moved by Unshackled. This book is not just a compelling personal narrative—it’s a call to action for anyone committed to justice, equity, and systemic change.
The author’s raw honesty and resilience in the face of oppression expose the realities of incarceration, systemic injustice, and the fight for dignity. Our book club had powerful discussions about the barriers faced by formerly incarcerated individuals and the urgent need for criminal justice reform.
What stood out most was the book’s emphasis on humanity and redemption—it challenges stereotypes and forces us to confront the deep flaws in our legal and prison systems. It’s not just a book; it’s a tool for advocacy and awareness.
I highly recommend Unshackled to activists, educators, and anyone passionate about dismantling unjust systems. Be prepared to be inspired, enraged, and ultimately, more determined to be part of the solution. Five stars!
