Leading a workshop and sharing session today with Forest Peoples Programme 's 'Shifting the Narrative', an online workshop series which seeks to create a learning space for communications practitioners to learn how to better support Indigenous self-representation, with an intersectional gender justice lens- so they can use media as a tool for visibility, justice, and reclamation. It was such a joy creating art for The Worldmaking board game for JASS (Just Associates) and SOAS University of London last year. Sharing the artwork along with some process sketches, took many many versions of course to get it right. The board game is designed to give players a playful, embodied experience of building transformative power in the face of the blockages created by internalised oppressions. The game simulates organising for racial and social justice. Players cooperate to move everyone towards a pre-set goal. Every player is given a certain number of build cards, symbolising the capacity of each to contribute to the progress of all. Every player is also given a number of block cards to symbolise the fact that each of us carry the codes of oppressive systems that often act as blockages on progress towards justice. The build and block cards are unevenly distributed among the players, symbolising our different positionings and capacities at any given moment. Players work as a collective to optimise the build cards of each and to mitigate and neutralise each other’s block cards (or the game can be played inversely where players work as individuals to block others and accrue personal power for an individual win). Marriage equality for the LGBTQI+ community is not up for debate. It's a no-brainer, a glaring need that's acknowledged across the globe. We're talking about love, safety, harm-reduction, acceptance, and recognizing LGBTQI+ relationships on the same level as anyone else's. Not giving equal marriage rights to LGBTIQ+ community is outdated and discriminatory.
