When I established VIG, my primary question was: How can data meaningfully respond to gender-based violence (GBV) and gender inequalities in complex settings, especially in conflict environments? This initial inquiry led to further exploration: How can we safeguard and protect vulnerable girls, boys, women, and men? How can we eliminate inequalities in our processes and procedures to ensure the generation of evidence-based recommendations? How can we ensure sustained empowerment even after our research concludes? How can we integrate feminist and intersectional approaches into our analysis and capacity-building efforts? Since then, we have collaborated with numerous international NGOs, experiencing both positive and negative encounters. Some clients advocate for leadership from the Global South, while others resist the term and the associated division. Despite encountering challenges and resistance, our mission remains steadfast: to lead from the Global South and challenge the status quo. We have faced setbacks but remain resolute in our commitment.
Despite facing challenges, VIG has experienced growth. We have recognised the importance of continuously engaging men in the process even at leadership levels, ensuring that addressing GBV, Violence Against Women and Girls, and gender inequalities is not solely the responsibility of women. Over the past year, we have recruited several colleagues, reshaping the landscape of VIG - this is what we look like now (see photo attached). Our journey has been one of continuous learning. We acknowledge that perfection is not attainable, nor is it our goal. Embracing imperfection is essential for growth and learning. If we were to achieve perfection, there would be no room for further improvement or exploration.
I would like to thank all my VIG staff and our clients who continue to support us. We continue to learn and gather feedback to get better.
Our efforts resonate with the theme of this year's International Women's Day, which focuses on 'Investing in Women: Accelerating Progress,' alongside the campaign theme of 'Inspiring Inclusion.' Recognising the vital role of investing in women to expedite progress towards gender equality, we have actively involved survivors of gender-based violence, individuals with disabilities, and refugees as team leaders. We continue to remain inclusive.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported our mission. Without your assistance, we would not have accomplished what we have thus far or made the impactful difference that we have.
