In 2018 Mariah Carey's “All I Want For Christmas Is You" attracted 10.2 million plays in a single day, setting a Spotify Record. In 2019 the singer earned a reported $1.7M just from streams off the song alone. This figure increased to $1.9 million in 2020. Let’s explore how she became the undisputed Queen of Christmas Carey's diamond-certified ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ has achieved mind-boggling levels of success since its release in 1994. A study in longevity, the song took over two decades to reach the summit of the Billboard Hot 100 list in 2019. It followed that feat in 2020 and 2021 - a historic 3-peat. According to MRC Data, each play earns Mariah at least 1¢. With continuous peaks over the holiday season and over a billion streams on Spotify alone, the song has been quoted as generating between $60 – $70 million in royalties over its lifespan. Fueled by its use in television commercials by brands such as the NBA and Walkers Crisps as well as live renditions - as will be seen on the upcoming CBS primetime concert special - the song has gained cultural ubiquity. It’s also proved to be a cross-generational holiday staple with a Justin Bieber duet accompanied by covers by Ariana Grande, Michael Bublé, Miley Cyrus, My Chemical Romance, Fifth Harmony, Kirk Whalum and many others. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has also led to great opportunities like the publishing of Carey’s holiday tale ‘The Christmas Princess’ as well as brand partnerships with McDonald's and the National Entertainment Collectibles Association. If the Economist's estimate of $2.5 million in yearly earnings of this song tells us anything; it’s that the greatest partnership Mariah Carey struck up was with the spirit of Christmas! 'YouTube’s latest transparency report reveals Content ID claims generated roughly $1.5 billion in additional annual payouts to rightsholders through monetization options. YouTube has managed to cast its Content ID system in a different light to rightsholders, allowing them to monetize infringing content instead of merely taking it offline. The concept of monetizing piracy is unusual but has resulted in a healthy revenue stream opportunity; rightsholders chose to monetize over 90% of all Content ID claims.' https://lnkd.in/gpAgE7sB

In the latest edition of the Building Stans Newsletter we touch on AI's effect on fan culture and fan-to-artist interaction. Our entry point is the impact of data scraping on fanfiction, through Ruby Thelot's brilliant 'Fanfiction After AI' essay. We ask, where will the expansion of AI leave fan-made passion plays like Amerigo Gazaway's 'Soul Mates Project'; a home for imaginative mashups that collides the worlds of artists like Beyoncé and Aretha Franklin. Speaking of Beyoncé, would fan-made creations like on Roblox re-imaginations of her #RenaissanceWorldTour thrive if AI displaces them? And besides these dedications what of the more participatory, interactive aspects of fandom culture? Where will AI's proliferation leave fan-made remixes, duets and covers? If AI versions of all these populate the internet... will fans continue to enjoy creating them? Perhaps the most concerning aspect of AI's impact on fandom is that AI models could very well be trained on the creations of fans! These musical labors of love could be 'scraped' & 'ingested' by AI bots without the consent of, or compensation to, fans who make these iterations. Read and subscribe to the newsletter below for more in-depth insights, artist breakdowns and fan engagement strategies: https://lnkd.in/d9gR52hG

Coldplay is the first music band in history to release an Annual Sustainability report 🎸🎶🌎 And it's everything you'd expect a Sustainability report to look like! The group did this for their “Music of the Spheres" World Tour which began in March, 2022. It has so far sold 7M+ tickets. Here are some stats from the report: 👉 The tour produced 47% less CO2 emissions than their previous one in 2016-17 👉 66% of all tour waste diverted from landfills 👉 5M+ trees planted (one for each concert goer). The trees will be supported to maturity via One Tree Planted. 👉The shows were powered by an electric battery system run on 100% renewable energy 👉 Each show generated 15kWh through solar installations, kinetic dance floors and power bikes – enough to power the C stage each night and provide the crew with phone, laptop and tool-charging stations (whoever thought of this is a genius) 👉 3,770 meals + 73 kg of toiletries donated from tour catering to the unhoused and unsheltered I'm pretty sure nobody was badgering them to release their numbers or do something about sustainability. Their fanbase surely wouldn't reduce if they didn't. Yet, the band went out of their way to make sure they were touring in the most sustainable way possible. Coldplay is setting a standard of sustainability in the global music industry. And they're doing it with swag. What are your thoughts? . . . . #sustainability #sustainable #renewableenergy #music #solar #veganism #plantbased #sustainablebusiness #sustainablefashion #branding

HOW ADIDAS CRACKED MUSIC BRAND PARTNERSHIPS A buzzword that I preach to brands who'd like to work with artists is ‘SYNERGY’. It's my belief that there are 3 sides to any successful music brand partnership : ARTIST, ARTIST’S FANS, THE BRAND. I call this the 'holy trinity theory'(diagram below). There needs to be fluid synergy between all parties for the partnership to work. 💡 ARTIST >>>>>FAN: This synergy has been created already by the artist via their music and messaging. The fans know the artist’s core values and what they care about. This is the main reason the brand wants to work with an artist. They want access to sell to fans/demographic. 💡 ARTIST>>>>>BRAND: Is there a natural synergy already between the brand’s product/service or can it be articulated to the artist’s fan base? Does the artist already use the product or service or similar products or services? Natural synergy = easier sell. If the synergy needs to be articulated, there needs to be creativity here. 💡 BRAND>>>>FAN: This is the hardest part of the trinity to crack. No one likes being sold to; especially Gen Z. The brand needs to use the artist as a vehicle to sell their product or service. I believe there are three 3 levels of brand partnership synergies: 1.Immediate synergy - there 's a natural synergy between all 3 parts of the holy trinity. There doesn’t need to be much creative articulation for this to work. I'll be talking about 2. creative articulation synergy and 3.zero synergy in later posts. I'll look at the Adidas/Kanye partnership to explain my holy trinity theory. This is IMMEDIATE SYNERGY. Analysts estimate that Yeezy line generated between $1.5- 2 billion revenue in 2022. It's believed that the line accounted for 40% of Adidas’ profit and 10% of its overall revenue in 2022. ADIDAS X KANYE(YEEZY) - IMMEDIATE SYNERGY The messaging from Kanye’s first ever album was that he cared about fashion, clothes, trainers(sneakers) etc. He didn’t call himself the ‘louis vuitton don’ for no reason. He then went on to create a successful footwear line, Yeezy with Nike. He leaves for Adidas because he believes he is not respected enough at NIke- he wants a royalty payment for the sales. There is constant messaging here from Kanye to his fans of his core values ( ARTIST >>>>> FAN) There is a natural and immediate synergy between Kanye and Adidas because Adidas already sells apparel and sneakers. Kanye wants to sell apparel and sneakers, and needs Adidas’ industry experience and global machine to facilitate this. (ARTIST>>>>BRAND) Adidas gives Kanye an apparel line AND also gives him royalties. The messaging from Adidas to kanye’s fans here is: Kanye has told you he is into fashion and trainers(sneakers). We can facilitate this, and give him creative control and royalty payment. WE CARE ABOUT KANYE AS MUCH AS YOU DO. Spend your money with us. (BRAND>>>>FAN). I will be posting about synergies 2 and 3 later on down the line. What are your thoughts on this?

This should set a precedent! "The suit alleges that OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Meta’s LLaMA were trained on illegally-acquired datasets from 'shadow library' websites like Bibliotik, Library Genesis, Z-Library and others. The claim further says the chatbots never bothered to reproduce any of the copyright management information plaintiffs included with their published works.” https://lnkd.in/dfaBXaYB
