The Racial Equity Index’s Post

The Racial Equity Index team has been slowly re-emerging on social platforms after much reflection, conversation, change, and planning. During these weeks of working and pondering, we’ve been discussing how far the global development sector - the sector we all work in, has come regarding racial equity. What progress has been made in addressing historically upheld racially inequitable structures and practices in global development? Looking around lately, there is a decline in interest in DEI and racial equity work and its implementation to balance the scales. We - and many of our peers wonder just how much DEI and racial equity have been embedded into the culture of organisations and their hiring, training, outreach, and well-being and retention strategies and policies. Have BIPOC folks working in global development felt a shift in these and other areas? Essentially, how many needles have been moved and how can we assess the strides the global development space has made in reducing racial inequities in its programming, institutions, etc? We’re sure there are others in the sector who have similar questions and are seeking answers. So, perhaps it’s time to pull out the magnifying glass and look a little closer.. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing details about the work we’ve undertaken recently. Our aim is to offer a way for people to investigate more deeply the DEI and racial equity initiatives their workplace has implemented so far. Via Alliance magazine by Uma Mishra-Newbery (she/her): Funders take note: ...After all this, I continue to ask, who continues to be impacted in the sector by taking the risk of speaking out against systemic inequities and the harm caused by the Global Development sector and the actors within it? And what is as clear as day is that the people most impacted by the sector not taking risks – funders specifically – not doing the very thing they advocate for – speaking truth to power, being intentional in our approach, being transparent, demanding accountability, etc – are Black women and women of colour.
