What's in your office? Had a guest stop by my office today. His journey was from just around the hall - but you know how it goes - we just don't visit as often as we once did. Call it post-COVID Workplace Syndrome. Now my office has sort of a nutty professor vibe. It signals "Don't ask that guy the time or he will tell you how to build a watch." Come to think about it - maybe that's the reason for the absence of visitors. But some find it interesting. The way I see it is that office memorabilia is more than just decoration. They are storytellers of our professional journey, encapsulating moments of growth, achievement, and connection within a professional environment. These items hold significant value beyond their physical presence. What may seem to be random items evoke memories of pivotal moments, projects, and milestones in our career. Some may be reminders of challenges overcome, successes celebrated, and lessons learned along the way. These artifacts also can spark conversations, as they did today, and connections with peers, and colleagues, and provide opportunities to share anecdotes, insights, and passions, fostering meaningful professional relationships. Or maybe it's just stuff. But I doubt it. #careers

A continuous goal I set for myself is to make my internal space as comfortable, warm, and inviting as possible. Most people feel uncomfortable within themselves. That's why it is so common for us to go seeking things outside of ourselves. We have not built up a home inside so why would we want to stay and invest time there? Our internal space should be where we are grounded in. How are you making your internal space welcoming for you to reside there?

I LOVE my office. When we moved into this house and I had a bedroom to convert into an office, my head spun with all my ideas. I think I had 6 different paint colors I wanted, and lots of art and butterflies to add to the color pallet. I haven't painted yet, however, my space is filled with all the things I love most: Butterflies EVERYWHERE, Flowers EVERYWHERE, Photos of my family EVERYWHERE, all my books proudly displayed, a vision board that includes quotes, postcards of places around the world I want to visit and funny photos of my dogs in cartoon version...and on occasion a candle burning for a smelly good day. On emotional days, or when I'm in a sticky situation and need a little extra something to keep me on track, my office is a place of joy and beauty and never fails to lift my spirits, and it's so pretty I can't help but smile. What does your work space look like? One of the health and wellness values I encourage others to embrace is the commitment to doing things that help you re-focus when things get a bit bumpy. I'm visually inspired and motivated, but not everyone is. Do you know yourself well enough to build your workspace that reflects your heart? If you don't have your ideal work space, think of your desktop on your computer as a creative blank sheet. Save images you love, copy quotes that motivate and inspire you. Write things on post-its and stick them to the bottom of your extra monitor. Get Creative! If your outside reflects your inside, you'll find motivation, peace and joy a lot easier to grasp when you need those things most. Every year in spring I get the same sense of rejuvenation, without even realizing how much I needed it. Spring is a season that beckons us outdoors, tempting us to abandon our desks for the sun and the blooming gardens. So how do we stay focused and motivated within the office environment? Imagine this: as you witness the greenery bloom under the sun, let it serve as a reminder of your own potential for growth and renewal. Just as the spring plants draw nourishment from the earth to flourish, so too can you nurture your goals and aspirations. Let the beauty of nature serve as a catalyst for creativity and productivity. Take some time to step outside and journal, brainstorm or simply meditate. Host a team meeting outside of the office space. Even taking time to reorganize can help open the mind to new possibilities and creative thinking. As I return to the office, I am enjoying the energy of being around colleagues but feel part of what made the office fun pre-Covid has been lost. As companies move to hot desks/hoteling with no assigned seating, the personality of the employees which is what used to make the office fun, in my opinion, is missing. One of the best parts of being in the office used to be seeing the personalities of the various employees and what kept them going, and is now missing. I remember an old colleague that who was a painter and would rotate paintings they did, or colleagues that kept a small window-sill succulent garden. Or those who had pictures of their kids or drawings their kids made them. I miss having knick-knacks that show who I am that act as conversation starters for new and old colleagues alike. Therefore, my advice to companies if #ReturnToOffice aka #RTO is part of your strategy consider going back to people having their assigned seat, most people always sit in the same place anyways, and this allows them to show their personality and make it feel like more of their own. Just my two cents!
