📈 Alex Blumenstein, Taylor Scollon and I just sold The Peak to Moses Znaimer's ZoomerMedia Limited for an aggregate purchase price of $5 million. Here’s how it all happened… Think back to 2020: At the start of the pandemic and Taylor, Alex and I were figuring out what was next for us. We loved Morning Brew and couldn’t figure out why nobody was writing a similar product for 🇨🇦… We consumed every article / podcast about their business, and developed our MVP (minimum viable product). We brainstormed names and came up with The Peak. It was a business term (market peak) and also Canadian (mountain peaks). Our friends at August spun up the logo. A week later, we started writing… The first newsletter went out on July 16, 2020 and we got it out every weekday after that. Taylor, Alex and I split up the writing. We shared it on LinkedIn, annoyed our friends to do the same, and Taylor got started on paid ads. Slowly but surely we got some traction. People loved our fast and fun Canadian business content. Eventually we cracked the code on acquisition and next thing you know… We hit 100,000 subscribers. At the same time, we were hard at work on selling ads. Alex and I had a ton of success selling to advertisers who valued our audience of affluent modern Canadian business leaders. And we hit millions of dollars in revenue. But the biggest breakthrough? Hiring an incredibly talented team. Truthfully, this was by far the biggest unlock and we couldn’t have done any of this without Sarah Bartnicka, Quinn Henderson, Katie Schiefer, Jonathan Vassallo, Kimberley Drapack, Tricia Chan, Eileen Nugraha, and Chris Abraham. Our talented team turned The Peak from a newsletter to a sustainable media business. Which led to a few acquisition offers but nothing felt right… Until we met Moses Znaimer and the Zoomer team. Moses and the team are unreal. — Moses is a Canadian media pioneer (MuchMusic, CityTV, etc) — Built an amazing Canadian media business w/ Zoomer — Undertaking an ambitious transformation to reach new audiences with their acquisition of blogTO and Daily Hive We're joining Zoomer to supercharge our vision of becoming the go-to media outlet for modern business leaders and decision makers in Canada. And I couldn’t be more excited to work with Moses, Omri Tintpulver and the whole team. If you read The Peak, listened to a podcast, attended an event, bought an ad or watched one of our TikToks, you supported us on this journey and we’re so grateful. Thank you again! Lastly, thank you to my good friend and counsel Spencer Burger, and the ConnectCPA LLP team for their support on this transaction. We're super happy and tremendously grateful to our team, investors, advertisers, readers, viewers and listeners. What’s next? The Peak you know and love isn’t going anywhere—it’s only going to get better. Thank you for taking this journey with us, and we’re excited for what comes next.
Congrats, but why did you sell and not just keep running/growing the company yourselves?
