It's not every day you hit a milestone you poured your heart and soul into, and today's one of those for me! Our YouTube channel just crossed 10,000 subscribers. I've seen companies with full marketing teams struggle to hit their targets, but I took this on alone. It was a solo effort, from the ground up—brick by brick, video by video—driven by the belief that we could create something that truly changes lives. I was ready to put in the work—long days, late nights, and countless weekends. In a world where businesses often throw money at problems, we took a different approach. After COVID-19, many EdTech companies saw their customer acquisition costs skyrocket, while their return on ad spend plummeted, leading to unsustainable business models. They poured huge amounts into advertising but couldn't achieve profitability.  However, we focused on creating high-quality content that truly helped our audience. As a result, 34% of our consultations come from social media, with YouTube quickly becoming our second-largest source of lead generation, and the growth is compounding in ways we're excited to see. It just goes to show that you don't need a massive budget to build something sustainable. Now, this YouTube channel isn't just a channel; it's a content engine purposefully built to serve as an evergreen lead generation funnel. We're proud to have carved this niche for ourselves, and even prouder of the positive impact we're making. A big shoutout to my boss, Sreekar Sannapareddy. His expertise is unmatched. One thing that worked for me the first time I ever started to monetize my brand was working my way from the ground up from the very start. I made my first sale when I had less than 100 followers. A few weeks after I created my account, put out a few content and ran ads to promote an offer and that got me one prospect. We went back and forth before they eventually paid me, but l made sure that she was convinced and l ensured I didn't lose that sale. eee get why After that, I didn't get any sales again until l got to little over 100 followers. That means for months, I was stuck in one place creating content and hustling for sale, but it didn't come. Then I knew had to do something I joined 2 communities. In one, we paid N2K monthly, and in the other; we paid N4K monthly Why did I join? - I needed the push to sell and to also get access to the community of people. Sales were slow on my page so I went where I could do exactly what l am already doing on my page but this time with a community of people who will easily trust me. I gave value to those communities and offered free help and then they started coming to me for help in the area of my expertise at the time (Facebook ads and landing pages) including the founders of the community. I had a deal with the founders of the community to always set up their ads and landing pages for them and they paid me a stipend and that's how I sort of had a stable income coming from my business. After that, I created my first digital product (free) and then sold it with the feedback I got from those who got it for free. Now, with all of these, I was able to have things to start showing on my page to get even more people to trust me in addition to the resources and value l already provide on my page. That's what I meant by working from the ground up. Another key thing I did was have a weekly budget of N5,000 as of 2020 to boost posts to drive more traffic and visibility to my page So, the more people saw my stuff they visited my page and saw my work and maybe followed, and then eventually became my clients. I talk about the different services I can offer my clients almost like every other day. I was a resource center for my audience. I gave so much for free without holding back. When you need to learn something about advertising, my page is the first place you need to come check out. Finally, I made sure everyone who worked with me got value so that they could either come back again or refer someone. To my 90s kids, y’all remember the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes? Yeah? Well here’s one of the most valuable marketing lessons I learned from them. For those of you who don’t remember (or aren’t beginning to have random creeks in your joints), here’s the cliff notes. Giant check. Balloons. Lots of ecstatic screaming. A sweepstakes of $10,000 (or more) delivered straight to your door without any clue it was coming. You’d see commercials all the time showing that one lucky winner whose life was just changed. By seeing it happen to a regular person, we all believed we could be next. We felt like we were connected to something bigger. Like we were seen despite lacking wealth or influence. We were just…. Normal. I know sweepstakes and contests happen all the time. But none did as good a job of displaying the emotion of winning as Publishers Clearing House. You may have heard people say (myself included) “Do for one what you wish you could do for all.” It’s one of my favorite lines. When I apply it en masse, though, I call it the Publisher’s Clearing House effect. It’s impossible to be hyper personal after crossing a certain size threshold. But if you can convey the EMOTION of those who’ve had personal experiences, you can make people feel like they’re a part of something. Like they connect to you more deeply than others. Here’s where the empathy comes in... When you make people feel that, you have to deliver! Publishers Clearing House’s core business was actually selling magazine subscriptions and merch. Through that, they were able to stay connected with their audience and build relationships. They manufactured micro moments of emotion and joy by serving small surprises in the mailbox. And what’s crazy is none of us minded that someone else won the big prize. Everyone was excited for them like it was a giant game of Price is Right with us as the in-studio crowd wearing yellow name tags. So if you’re looking to create a personal experience for a large audience, maybe you should stop trying so hard. Do this instead: 1. Create micro moments of emotional connection with your core business. 2. Create as many hyper personal moments as you can (within reason and within a healthy boundary). 3. Capture the emotion of success (story/video/testimonial, etc). 4. Keep it in front of the community to remind them that success is possible even when it feels like it isn’t. Maintaining a high-touch brand becomes challenging at a certain point, but this is one of the many ways you can still cling to the core value of making people feel seen, known, and understood in the midst of growth.
