Ukraine Human Rights Associate

Position Overview:

The Human Rights Associate conducts independent human rights research and documentation, advocates for change with decision-makers and relevant stakeholders, and facilitates technical support, access to opportunities, and protection for human rights defenders and affected communities.  They provide country-based knowledge and lead the strategic direction of Fortify Rights’ work within the countries where they work. The Human Rights Associate monitors human rights developments and serves as a focal point for representing the team and providing credible information on human rights concerns. The Human Rights Associate is a member of Fortify Rights’s country team and receives strategic guidance and technical support from all other teams, including Fortify Rights’s team of directors, technical team, operations team, creative media team, etc.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with Fortify Rights’s relevant team members, develop a concrete and coherent country strategy aimed at ensuring human rights for all through independent research and documentation, multi-level stakeholder engagement, and customized support to human rights defenders. 
  • Identify and investigate priority human rights issues through interviews, focus group discussions, site visits, document collection, secondary research, and other forms of both qualitative and quantitative evidence collection in line with best practices. 
  • Analyze and document human rights violations through written material and audio/visual mediums—in collaboration with the Multimedia Specialist—for both public and private distribution. Provide sound analysis of research findings within the framework of international human rights and humanitarian law along with concrete recommendations to address specific violations.
  • Monitor human rights practices and serve as a credible, reliable source of human rights information, both internally and externally.
  • Draft and edit original written material, including internal or private memorandums, letters to governments or other stakeholders, press releases, long-form reports, submissions to the United Nations or other international bodies, op-eds, articles, and/or blogs, in a timely manner.
  • Conduct strategic advocacy with government officials, elected representatives, members of the diplomatic community, representatives of U.N. and other international agencies, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and other key decision-makers, influencers, and stakeholders with a view towards addressing human rights concerns and improving the human rights situation.
  • Represent the organization on human rights issues. Engage regularly with local and mainstream news media outlets, including online, print, television, radio, and other platforms. Respond in a timely and professional manner to requests for comments, interviews, and assistance from members of the media. 
  • Develop positive and supportive relationships with human rights defenders, organizations, and affected communities. Identify key partners to work with on a sustained basis to strengthen local responses to human rights abuses.  
  • Work with human rights allies and partners to identify objectives and develop strategies, reinforce strengths, and address weaknesses. Develop and conduct tailored training and participatory workshops, assist with research and documentation efforts, and implement other tasks to respond to the needs identified by partners. 
  • Work closely with the development and executive team to contribute to fundraising and monitoring and evaluation processes. Contribute to timely reporting through regular monitoring and reporting on project activities and support the Partnerships Manager in tracking and gathering data to evaluate the progress of projects.
  • Work closely in collaboration with the Fortify Rights team to ensure effectiveness, scale the organization’s impact, and ensure sustainability. 
  • Perform other tasks as requested. 

Qualifications:

  • Post-graduate degree in relevant fields or comparable work experience. Law degree preferred. At least five years of experience in human rights research, documentation, strategic advocacy, and engagement. 
  • Excellent knowledge on the human rights situation in Ukraine. Experience researching and analyzing complex human rights issues. Demonstrated ability to produce high quality written material in a timely manner. 
  • Solid understanding of human rights and humanitarian law, and ability to apply human rights and humanitarian law frameworks to documented situations of abuse.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of people, including survivors and witnesses of abuse, media, government and high-ranking officials, U.N. and non-governmental organization representatives, and others. Ability to represent the organization both publicly and privately, particularly on human rights issues in Ukraine. 
  • Excellent public-speaking skills and ability to engage local and mainstream media outlets on human rights issues. 
  • Experience working collaboratively and effectively with human rights defenders and affected communities. Ability to develop and facilitate participatory trainings and workshops and provide ongoing technical support to human rights defenders and partner organizations. 
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and time management skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a flexibly structured team. A willingness to learn and contribute to a positive team environment. Strong creative-thinking, organization, problem-solving, and time management skills. Demonstration of sound judgement and ability to take initiative.
  • Willingness to travel within Europe and to Southeast Asia. This may include travel to remote and potentially insecure areas.  
  • Fluency in written and oral English and Ukrainian required.

Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) Human Rights Associate

Position Overview

The Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) Human Rights Associate is a highly motivated and skilled individual supports Fortify Rights’s independent human rights research and documentation using established, new, and emerging OSINT methodologies. They serve as a knowledgeable and experienced resource on conducting revelatory OSINT human rights research. The Associate’s OSINT research will be used internally and externally for publication and to contribute to revelatory investigations conducted by Fortify Rights country teams in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Ukraine. The OSINT Associate’s investigations will be used to engage people with power on solutions to complex human rights issues. The Associate will also work with country teams to strengthen community-based responses to human rights violations, including through workshops, trainings, and other efforts to support the work of our partners. 

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with relevant team members, conduct OSINT research to gather, analyze, and verify information related to human rights violations and abuses, including mass atrocity crimes in the countries where Fortify Rights works.
  • Collaborate with Fortify Rights country teams in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Ukraine to ensure accurate and timely reporting on human rights issues affecting communities.
  • Utilize digital tools and platforms to monitor and collect information on emerging human rights situations, contributing to early warning and rapid response initiatives.
  • Stay informed about developments in OSINT methodologies and technology to enhance the organization’s capabilities in human rights documentation.
  • Assist in preparing and presenting findings, including creating reports, briefings, and visual materials for internal and external use and publication.
  • Work closely with Fortify Rights staff to contribute to strategic advocacy strategies aimed at promoting and protecting human rights and holding perpetrators of violations accountable.
  • Build relationships with relevant partners, including local organizations, activists, and digital rights experts.
  • Develop and implement skill-building technical trainings and/or workshops on conducting OSINT investigations to build the capacity of Fortify Rights’s team members and partners. Provide ongoing technical support and facilitate technical learning opportunities for Fortify Rights team members and partners.
  • Work closely in collaboration with the Fortify Rights team to ensure effectiveness, scale the organization’s impact, and ensure sustainability.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., information technologies, international relations, human rights, political science, or a related discipline) or comparable work experience.
  • Proven experience in OSINT research and analysis, preferably in a human rights context.
  • Strong understanding of digital tools, social media platforms, and other online resources for OSINT.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess and verify information from multiple sources.
  • Knowledge of international human rights standards and mechanisms is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly and compellingly. Facility with multiple languages is a plus but not required.
  • A positive outlook, attitude, and willingness to work in a progressive, non-traditional work environment.
  • Sound judgment and ability to take initiative.

Data Management Associate

Position Overview

The Data Management Associate supports the team by ensuring the proper organization and maintenance of various types of data critical to Fortify Rights’s work. They are also responsible for ensuring that the systems and platforms used to store Fortify Rights’s data are secure, efficient, and easy to navigate. The Data Management Associate will work across Fortify Rights’s teams to ensure data, information, and material produced or collected by team members is cleaned, categorized, and complete and organized to allow for easy retrieval and analysis when necessary or requested. The Data Management Associate will also identify and develop new systems, and tools to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Fortify Rights’s data management systems. The DataManagement Associate is an integral member of Fortify Rights’ growing team with technical expertise to maximize and scale the organization’s impact. 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall management to Fortify Rights’s data management systems, including the impact tracker, multimedia library, contacts database, investigation database, and other data and information systems. 
  • With support from relevant team members, lead the process of developing new systems and tools that are necessary to store data, information, and material produced or collected by team members. 
  • Ensure Fortify Rights’s data management systems are secure, efficient, and easy to navigate and allow for easy retrieval and analysis. 
  • Identify and maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date data, information, and material within Fortify Rights’s systems. Support Human Rights Specialists and other relevant team members in recording and managing relevant information. 
  • Track, input, clean, and organize relevant qualitative and quantitative data within Fortify Rights’s various systems.
  • Provide necessary qualitative and quantitative data on Fortify Rights’ strategic activities, outputs, and impacts to support the development of outputs by various team members, including publications, communications material, grant proposals and reports, fundraising material, and other material. 
  • Develop a sound understanding of Fortify Rights’ work and projects to be able to professionally represent the organization. 
  • Work closely in collaboration with the Fortify Rights team to constructively build the organization, support its expansion, streamline its systems, and ensure its sustainability. 
  • Perform other tasks as requested. 

Qualifications:

  • A degree in relevant fields and/or at least two years of data management work experience. 
  • Data science, data analytics, and/or data visualization experience preferred
  • Familiarity with Airtable, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft BI, MaxQDA, and/or other databasing tools. 
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Excellent organization and time management skills. 
  • Ability to self-manage and work efficiently in a fast-paced but flexible environment. 
  • Familiarity with human rights issues.

Learning Associate

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:

POSITION OVERVIEW: 

The Learning Associate supports the team in understanding the effectiveness of Fortify Rights’ strategies with a view towards maximizing human rights impacts. In coordination with relevant team members, the Learning Associate supports the development and management of systems, tools, and studies to capture learnings and improve the effectiveness of Fortify Rights’ activities. The Learning Associate is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the outcomes and impacts of Fortify Rights’ activities and outputs. The Learning Associate also supports the production of quality, comprehensive, and accurate material for donors and prospective donors. The Learning Associate is an integral member of Fortify Rights’ growing team with technical expertise to maximize and scale the organization’s impact. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide overall management to Fortify Rights’ impact monitoring and learning systems. 
  • With support from the executive team and relevant team members, lead the process of evaluating and assessing the effectiveness of Fortify Rights’ activities. Support the manage and maintainence of systems and tools to track learnings. 
  • Identify and maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date information on Fortify Rights’ strategic activities, outputs, outcomes, and impacts. Support Human Rights Specialists and other relevant team members in reporting relevant information. Give internal presentations and produce weekly and quarterly impact monitoring reports for team members.
  • Where relevant, create guidance notes, database interface, and learning sessions to ensure team members have clear understanding of our impact monitoring and learning system and can use them with ease. 
  • Support the development and management of Fortify Rights’ media library to ensure that impact-related media is properly archived and tagged for easy retrieval.
  • Coordinate and support in-house and external independent evaluations of Fortify Rights’ programs and operations. Oversee feedback collection processes for Fortify Rights and The Fort activities and lead internal review sessions.
  • Support the production of quality, comprehensive, and accurate material for donors and prospective donors. Provide necessary qualitative and quantitative data on Fortify Rights’ strategic activities, outputs, and impacts to support the development of grant proposals, grant renewals, fundraising materials, and other material. Identify appropriate impact-related media to support the production of donor-related materials.
  • Create materials for interested human rights organizations to share knowledge and build their capacity on organizational impact tracking and learning systems.
  • Develop a sound understanding of Fortify Rights’ objectives to be able to professionally represent the organization. 
  • Work closely in collaboration with the Fortify Rights team to constructively build the organization, support its expansion, streamline its systems, and ensure its sustainability. 
  • Perform other tasks as requested. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree in relevant fields and/or at least two years of monitoring and evaluation work experience.  
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations in Asia.
  • Familiarity with human rights issues, preferably within the context of Asia.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Excellent organization and time management skills. 
  • Ability to self-manage and work efficiently in a fast-paced but flexible environment. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cross-cultural communication, and experience in a multi-ethnic team.
