By 2050, 1 in 7 Bangladeshis will be displaced due to climate change. In the face of #LossAndDamage from climate-related disasters, YPSA are helping families who are forced to migrate.   The YPSA project is one of many community-led initiatives supported by CJRF using funding from The Scottish Government. Loss and damage funding is vital for communities on the frontlines of the #ClimateCrisis.   We want to see further pledges for loss and damage funding at #COP28 and beyond. Our partners at SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute released a new report TODAY, detailing lessons learned from the Scottish Government’s 2021 funding commitment to #LossAndDamage. CJRF is proud to have played a part in making sure those at the local level are able to fund community-driven approaches to addressing the impacts of #ClimateChange. It’s been a long road to the Loss and Damage Fund, but at #COP28 in Dubai we expect to see it agreed. There has been much compromise from developing countries in the development of the fund – but the inclusion of community access in the final recommendations is an important step forward. We are delighted to see the work of our grant partners Helvetas Bangladesh and Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) spotlighted in this article from Context, which explores the benefits of community leadership in loss and damage responses. Our projects with Helvetas and YPSA, alongside similar community-led initiatives in Malawi and the Pacific, are providing key learnings for the implementation of a #LossAndDamage fund at COP28. “There should a community 'window' in loss and damage funding that gives out smaller grants and is directly accessible by communities," says our Director @Heather McGray. We can see from existing projects that community leadership on loss and damage brings fairer outcomes. When communities are in the driving seat, they are able to identify collective priorities and address them with solutions tailored to their specific needs. With the Loss and Damage Fund set to become operational at #COP28, it has never been more essential to center community voices. https://lnkd.in/eV5EQHAD

We join the rest of the international climate community in mourning Dr. Saleemul Huq. Over the years, CJRF has supported his and International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD)’s work, including the Community Based Adaptation Conference series that Dr. Huq founded. And he supported us back in many powerful ways! His generous spirit and commitment to #ClimateJustice will continue to teach us and inspire our work for many years to come. 

As the Transitional Committee on Loss and Damage meets for #TC4, and for final time before #COP28, we must continue to center the experiences of frontline communities. #LossAndDamage Fund negotiations must take into account learnings from projects already taking place.
