Dovetail to manage #ResearchOps? I'm consulting with a team to help improve their #UX maturity, user research acumen, and related partnerships and processes. They have made incredible progress in the past three months and it's absolutely thrilling to watch this take shape and see them thrive! This week they begin piloting Dovetail to help manage their user research projects, documents, and collaboration - throughout the entire lifecycle of their #UXR projects. Here is the setup we are testing. Each phase has a culturally relevant interpretation of my #CuriosityTank tools and templates and links to examples. Would love to hear your feedback, suggestions, tips, first impressions etc.! #userresearch #userexperience #design #uxdesign

I'm a huge fan of AirTable. Dovetail looks like Trello, another drag and drop lists app, but AirTable is genuinely useful for all things research and research ops - be it preparation or insight storage. One big caveat: there are a lot of people overcooking research in a big way. We must all remember that we are agile team members, and that agile isn't about spending time on things that aren't the delivery item. When I say overcooked, I mean just overdone - too much in the way of formal prep. Again, I'm not for a second saying don't prep, but the goldilocks amount of prep is key. Some people get pulled into huge rabbit holes by this and many times it's just inexperience. That all said, with low maturity teams having a handrail is also a good thing - but you can see what I mean about the right amount of focus on it, otherwise the team spends more time doing admin and process and less time on understanding the people and their needs. Research should be quick and relatively easy. We all know that it isn't but that's where we need to be aiming for. Agile research (NOT LEAN!) is what will help low maturity teams climb the maturity curve quicker. Research as standard. Every sprint.

Michele Ronsen I'd love to see your workflow practices implementing this with the wider team. Currently planning on bringing our BA's into the process to help build out a research repository.

Interesting use. I've been in #ResearchOps for a very short time. I'm a librarian. Three observations: 1. It's really important to be where your users are already. To a point. 2. It's also important to recognise when you're using something in a fashion which doesn't fit It's original use case. 3. This is the tricky bit! It's vital to recognise when your use of something becomes "trying to fit a square peg into a round hole." I'm not saying that this use of Dovetail is that & I will take a further look. But sometimes, the effort to use something researchers are using already looks to be a good idea, but actually comes at the cost of too much compromise on the functionality & usability of the resulting solution. Just because something is where everyone is & comes at no extra cost doesn't make it the right tool. A fine balance and hard call.
