5 things to do
We got to interview dozens of talented content entrepreneurs in 2022. Some are in the early stages, while others have experienced mega success. They cross the platform spectrum, from blogs and podcasts to Twitch and TikTok. Over the last two Friday issues of the year, we share some of our favorite actionable advice from them.
1. Get paid to learn: Use the knowledge gained in a traditional full-time job to build and grow your content business. (Kar Brulhart, who earned six figures in her first year teaching brands how to grow on Instagram.)
2. Make appointment viewing (or reading): Early on, Khairi Harris set a schedule to encourage viewers to keep coming back for more, and it worked. If somebody sees you at this time each day, and then you don’t show up for weeks, people will lose interest, especially on Twitch. (Khairi Harris of KDotDaGawd, who earned partner status without applying because Twitch was so impressed by his community-building.)
3. Don’t just ask brands to partner: Create a pitch tailored to what your content business will provide and how the brand will benefit. (Matthew and Karla Bailey of Must Do Canada, who did $100K in sponsored content in 2021.)
4. Have patience: Too many YouTubers (and other creators) also don’t give their content enough time to grow. Diana says the first year is an investment period. The second year begins to bring results. (Diana and Jeka Bolbat of Vania Mania Kids, who now have over 25M subscribers across 15 localized channels.)
5. Do some inner work: Whether it’s yoga, meditation, or time in nature, do the work to understand yourself. “Find a practice that you can do on yourself every single day to make yourself better,” Kat says. “Get yourself to a place where trolls on the internet won’t affect you.” (Kat Norton of Miss Excel, who built a seven-figure business in year one.)
