Is creator content being viewed in the same light as content produced by Hollywood? Yes, if you ask YouTube. The platform just announced the launch of Primetime Channels, giving people the ability to sign up, browse, and watch TV shows, movies, and other premium content from 30+ streaming services (e.g., SHOWTIME, Paramount+, Starz, etc.) in the YouTube app. Users will see this content integrated directly into their YouTube experience, including alongside content from their favorite creators. Notably, YouTube isn't prioritizing premium content over creator content either — both will be ranked the same in searches and recommendations outside of personalized experiences.   This move is more than just allowing people to watch native YouTube content and their favorite shows and movies in the same place. It's a signal of how creator content and premium content are a lot closer when it comes to entertainment despite the differences in budgets or production quality. Similarly to binge-watching a hit show, some people spend hours and hours watching videos from their favorite creators. Creator content and premium content don't necessarily have to compete against each other, either. Primetime Channels create a feeder-like system where viewers can watch a TV show and immediately watch a creator do a show recap. On the other end, viewers can see a creator-produced movie trailer breakdown, which then leads to them watching the movie via Primetime Channels. YouTube could streamline this experience by curating collections that pair movies and shows with relevant creator content (e.g., movie reviews/recaps, show first reactions, interviews with actors, etc.). Plus, branded content opportunities could be layered in to reward creators who are driving watch time for Primetime Channels. This feels a lot like seeing products from creator-led brands on the same shelves as products from the world's biggest companies in retail stores. #creatoreconomy #youtube

Gary Vaynerchuk inspired me to start on the content producing journey a few years ago. Gary said you need to become "digital mayor" of your community, so I started creating Live Shows (SmallBizSpotlight highlighting local community small businesses/organizations etc.) first on Facebook and then on LinkedIn and YouTube. Gary also suggested that you need to be a content producing machine and there are so many avenues/platforms for distributing content without the need to have expensive equipment, video/photographers and studios like settings. I have a long way to go when I am very consistent in producing and distributing content. Great presenters provide VALUE to their audience WITHOUT Expecting Anything in Return.

Interesting. How much is the cut for content providers under this new program, do you know?

Treating equally prioritizes, in effect, individual creator over premium. Premium product may cost millions to make while millions of creators with a smart phone can post content.

So… YouTube, which is the largest outlet - by far - for user-generated content is now going to be filled with the same content from multi-billion dollar studios that can be found on every other streaming service in the world. This is NOT a good thing. It’s just like when Medium went from awesome independent writers to the same big writers that are published everywhere else - they lost what made them special in an effort to emulate everyone else.

With the advancement of technology there is certainly a middle layer that is emerging when it comes to video production. Niche content can certainly be produced on smaller scale and still create fantastic results. However, I think this is an emerging layer that is adding to our content and not necessarily taking anything away. There will always be a need and market for the biggest budget projects. They have their own place and role in our entertainment.
