I took my sweet old time with Put Your Ass Where Your Heart Wants To Be for one reason - I wanted the journey to last as long as possible. Alas, I finished the final chapter today. It was bittersweet.
If you're looking for Steven Pressfield-styled inspiration retooled in a new package this is a good buy. I got the Kindle ebook and the Audible audiobook. I listened to the audiobook and it's a treat. Steve narrates as usual and his voice is calming yet realistic. It's a great listen, especially if, like me, you don't have as much time on your hands to read but are able to listen.
As someone dealing with their own Resistance, day in day out, it's always helpful to have some sort of mantra or cornerstone that you go back to. That's what non-fiction works from Steven Pressfield (and Seth Godin) do for me. This book is no exception. It is in the theme of Resistance fighting; there are excerpts from The War of Art and The Artist's Journey, to name but a few of his books, so if you're experienced with Steve's works this will help familiarize the territory. Yet Steve has since expanded on his core tenet; you can tell that there's been growth in his outlook on the entire subject. Or maybe, he's always had these extra outlooks and has decided now is the time to share more sides to this perspective. In the same way he notes that an artist's body of work grows over time and mines the depths of one or a few similar topics, Steve has managed to yet again spin a subject that you didn't think could be spun again.
There are no condemnations in the book, just laying out of the reality of what it means to embark upon the journey of doing the hard work; doing the great work.
There are a lot of great moments from this book; however, I have to say that having just finished it, the final chapter is my favorite. It's so true yet very open ended.
If this book is for you then I hope you'll find it a brilliant addition to your collection and, more importantly, yet another tool in your kit in the fight against Resistance.
What’s the message? Commit. Commit with your whole ass. Put yourself where you need to be and do what you need to do. Your life depends on it.
Recommended.
This book was a quick read, with each chapter being a short essay- kind of blog post flavored.
Yet all the chapters hang together cohesively - within a trajectory of what he is communicating.
It’s just so damn encouraging to hear someone say out loud so much of what goes on inside me (and I suspect many) in terms of experiencing resistance, and overcoming it by doing what has to be done - whether we feel like it or not.
Rather than a “rah rah” success coach who then boasts a life changing workshop for a high ticket price, Pressfield is realy human. He lets you know that he’s felt these things too - and here’s what he’s done to pull through.
Personally I like the style of his longer books better, but hey - who am I to say what he should write! It was excellent nonetheless, highly recommended.

It’s a clean, easy straightforward read. It’s a book you can read in a day but it has the potential to change the rest of your life.
This inspirational book is a must-read for writers, actors, artists, entrepreneurs. It’s for anyone working on a creative project.
It is obvious that you need to show up and do the work to achieve your dream. For example, a writer needs to show up at their desk, a painter at the easel and a singer at practice, every day.
Pressfield explains in great detail and simplicity, how and why we must overcome resistance to show up regularly. It’s not an easy task, Pressfield not only makes it easy but also inspires.
He elucidates how it’s sometimes important to move to the geographical location which is at the center of your creative pursuit. This way it’s more likely to get the support, opportunities and mentorship you require. He beautifully explains how synchronicities that further your dreams, are more likely to take place when you move to the right place.
He cites examples of well-known personalities and the coincidences that worked for them when they moved to the right place to fulfill their dreams.
Love how he reminds us how success happens in any field. He rightly says your friends help you. The friends you made when you and they were broke and starving. As your friends rise in their careers they take you along.
As you keep reading, Pressfield guides you to keep going despite the resistance and your tendency to self-sabotage. He offers a deep explanation of how and why we need it to keep going. He’s amazingly convincing and motivating. He says the muse is pleased with your commitment to furthering your creative pursuit.
He shares how he kept going for several years without any success. As going back to a job was not something that worked for him, he had no choice but to keep going.
He says “If we just keep plugging away at it, the Law of Self-Ordering comes to our aid.
Work—day-in, day-out exertion and concentration—produces progress and order. That’s a law of the universe.”
It’s incredibly encouraging when he says “You too have a body of work. It exists inside you, on the Plane of Potentiality. Are you a writer? This body of work exists, like books on a bookshelf. Close your eyes. You can see them.”
”Can we put our ass where our heart wants to be if we’ve got a family, a job, a mortgage? Yes. The Muse does not count hours. She counts commitment.” These and many more words of wisdom are sprinkled throughout the book. Hope you love reading it as much as I did.

Easily the best piece of Pressfields work since the War of Art.
