After a painful delay related to the ongoing global pandemic, the Analogue Pocket finally launched this week, with those who pre-ordered many moons ago getting the chance to sample the company's latest FPGA-powered creation.
Pre-orders for the console also re-opened this week too, but buyers are being told that they might have to wait until 2023 before their order is fulfilled. This is due to the global chip shortage, which is also impacting Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
As is so often the case when supply is massively outstripped by demand, those in search of a quick buck have been flocking to sites like eBay to make a killing. As spotted by Retro Dodo, there are several sealed Analogue Pocket consoles for sale, as well as a few 'confirmed pre-orders', too.
The prices vary, but one thing is for sure – they're all being hawked for much more than the initial sale price direct from Analogue.
Of course, simply asking for a sum of cash for one of these systems on eBay isn't the same as actually getting it, so a quick look at 'completed items' gives a more accurate picture – but, to be honest, the prices aren't that far off, even for those consoles which have successfully sold:
Analogue has come under fire in recent years for not producing enough of its products and creating insane demand, but it's important to remember that it is a small company that doesn't have the resources of the likes of Nintendo and Sony; while it's certainly annoying that it can't manufacturer more of its systems, in the case of the Analogue Pocket, its hands are tied by the ongoing shortage of components.
If you want one of these systems right now and can't wait until 2023, you're going to have to pay through the nose, unfortunately.

I am seriously tired of the scalping. Systems, games, controllers. How do we end this?
Scalpers gonna scalp. The biggest worry is it creates artificial demand and the poor devs might end up with excess stock on an incredibly niche product
Mmm, still an early moment, I ordered tuesday.. (was on time, but stupid credit errors made my order confirmed at 8.24 pst).. but you don't have a group yet, so what are you buying....
@Hck In the Free Market, you really can't. There would have to be a means to either reduce demand or have more production. But the silicon shortage isn't helping, nor is the fact that Analogue doesn't mass produce nearly as many units compared to other manufacturers. It's a slippery slope, and it's a good thing I ordered my Analogue Pocket minutes after the pre-order started on Tuesday. The only thing that people can do is not buy these scalped items because then the seller will have to eventually reduce the price to get a sale, or they will have lost interest in the product.
Just never buy from scalpers, but we already know that.
@Hck One thing we can probably do is get online retailers like eBay and Amazon to include a report/flag option for scalping.
So if you see someone scalping an item above the MSRP, a user can report it, and the retailer can either take down the listing, or convert it to the MSRP.
Of course, with eBay, you can also set up auctions, so that could be a way for scalpers to get around that, but for buy-it-now, they'd be up you-know-what creek without a paddle.
@romanista That's a very good point.
No one knows what dispatch group they're in, if you're in group B or group C, you're going to be waiting a long time for that inflated Pocket!
Please stop using the word "scalpers" Nintendo Life 😭😭 even though I don't like resellers, that term is outdated
If you're willing to wait a potentially very long time to receive it, you can still order one directly from Analogue at the moment.
We have to make scalping illegal, so they would go to jail. This is like selling weed on the internet tbh. It's just a horrible thing to do.
Edit: I get so pissed over scalpers as i don't have 220 dollars to spend each month on new electronica. So i have to wait for sales or restocks when i do have the money but if they keep selling out then there is no reason to even try to freaking save some goddamn money.. 😔 society is only about money these days and nothing else.
Analogue caused this to happen by making sure Youtube would be flooded with dozens and dozens of videos about the Pocket at the same time.
@Kilamanjaro Honest q: is there another term that fits better than "scalper"? I'm out of the loop on how "scalper" is outdated. I'm down for a new term, but "reseller" isn't accurate, right?
I imagine most people who got one did so to sell on for a profit.
Analogue website says your order will be cancelled if you put it up for sale before receiving it. However, I don’t know how they would like their customer to the ebay seller. I hate scalping.
At least Analogue are trying to stop scalpers/resellers/whatever you want to call them - quoted from their pre-order FAQ:
"However, if you place multiple orders for Pockets, attempt to subvert the quantity limit, place your order using a bot, or are found to have placed your pre-order for sale prior to delivery, you order will immediately be canceled or moved to the end of the line."
Not sure what else they could do TBH. I'm going to hold off pre-ordering for now - looks great, but I'm not sure if I actually want one or if it's just the hype clouding my judgement.
Not surprised. These are the same losers that scalped Happy Meals and Oreos because of Pokémon editions. It's honestly pathetic.
@SalvorHardin i know they cant keep up with demand without them. could be cynical say their employess all have ebay accounts for their xmas bonus.
Selling a product 4-5 times its value should be illegal. Can't believe scalpers are selling for like 1000$ their pre-orders that may arrive in 2023, thats sick.
Everyone is praising Analogue Pocket so much. I wish Nintendo would release an affordable real Gameboy (with amoled preferred) or just buy Analogue and move to mass production
Would be useful to know what the regular price of the product is in the article - I don’t know if this is a £50 piece of hardware or a £500 one?
Scalpers seriously need to get bent. Absolute scumbags.
I’ll give you two NFTs for a Pocket Analogue…
@FRED_KID I'm assuming the op is referring to a term that is used with Native Americans. Strong belief that Natives started scalping, but some possibilities state Europeans could have introduced it to them.
If they going to release a product in this manner then what do they expect!
Scalpers gonna scalp.
Alternatives to the term "scalper" that might fit are "racketeer" or "black marketeer". Racketeering is a crime, of course, for example a protection racket, where someone sells a solution to a problem that they are creating.
Black marketeering is typically a wartime problem, but exists wherever there is scarcity of a commodity, regardless of what it is.
The effect of this is that, for example when food is scarce, the wealthy can afford to pay more to get more, and then this encourages criminality, prices are driven up and those who would normally be able to feed themselves can no longer afford to do so.
In this case, it's a non-essential product that is being profiteered from, but at the beginning of the pandemic, we should remember there were no shortage of people that wanted to control the supply of sanitary products to line their own pockets. It does need to be stopped. Even with technology, in my opinion, it should still be a crime. It's certainly despicable.
Scalping is certainly not native American specific and it’s a descriptive term to describe and name a specific action - one that is not exactly a beautiful cultural moment by the way. What other horrible act do you want to be protective of, if that was the reasoning behind calling the term outdated? I don’t have feelings about the term being especially accurate for off market trading, but I do care about over sensitivity.
Offering is not the same as selling. I’m guessing not many of these actually sell.
Jail time for price gouging on non-essential items!? How would that be to anyone’s benefit?
Scalpers have always existed, always.
But since the pandemic it only become many times worse, I mean a local store had e certain luxury soap on sale (60% off) that is never really on sale, guess what people scalp that and sell it online for double the price.
Or another store had some cheap code in a box switch games, cheaper than they ever been on the eshop.
Also scalped.
It's ridiculous what people scalp nowdays, it's sickening.
I thought Analogue only limit 2 per customer with the pre-order, how did scalpers bypass that?
This is why we can't have nice things 😓
This people will be getting their own circle in hell.
@broskiplays agreed, sites like eBay absolutely love scalping thought because they make huge money off it with those seller fees. There needs to be regulations that take some effort to place on MSRP items. Collectors items can go for whatever they want to. Like if this thing were no longer in production then fine charge your 1500 because then the normal trend of lowering the price until a market is found on said collectors item will happen as it always does. But charging excessively more than MSRP for an item that A. Just came out B. Has an MSRP and C. is still in production is completely ridiculous. I think it would only happen if people start reporting these businesses to the BBB for allowing scalping to happen.
Ooh shocking news. It's a sad state of things that anything with a limited production run is just seen as an opportunity for some now.

@dimi why illegal? go after the symptom instead of the cause? Maybe it should be illegal for governments to hand out trillions of money while at the same time hamperring production. Digital items can be mass produced indefinitely to mask inflation but not physical items which exposes reality.
@Ocaz
Companies like Nintendo love scalping too. Like with Amiibo runs and Nes/Snes classic. Unavailability creates fomo which makes people want a product more. Consumers that cant purchase an item are the ones hurt in this game.
@SalvorHardin
So Analogue caused this by making a good product and marketing it? What should they have done instead? Make a product nobody wants? Tell people not to buy their product?
I don't think ebay or amazon are going to end scalping because it would hamstring their profits. Every sale these scalpers make, ebay/amazon get back a % of the sale.
@AquaVibe the problem is that the one who actually created the product won't get any profit or share from the resale. In that case, it's like pirating.
@cleveland124 it's essential to use social media for your products these days, otherwise you will never be able to get enough sales. So i totally agree with you. It's not the fault of Analogue that there are scalpers. It's the fault of the government and used product policies that caused scalping to become so popular. If they acted earlier and made scalping only possible for actual businesses like stores etc. then this was never going to be a thing. And yes, covid and manufacturer shortages are also part of the reason but it is not the only reason.
Wow, not surprised lol
This kind of thing is especially difficult to mitigate with a product like the Analogue Pocket. It's a small company with smaller production runs, etc. But there's also a smaller market for it, so there's hope this won't last. This is also a case where it could just be a bunch of sellers who have a small number of units to sell, and in some cases did not intend to sell them at first. The thing that really should be better regulated is what has been happening with the PS5 and Series X, where bots are scooping up massive amounts of inventory, and resellers are basically acting as if they are retailers with ridiculous stock in warehouses. This artificially drives the price up quickly. The scale of this reselling is absurd and the bots make it unfair for those trying to buy these through proper channels. That's the area where things can be done.
Simple solution. Sites should not be allowed to sell "pre-orders."
This is the price we pay for physical goods, unfortunately. As demand increases, so will price. The only way to combat this is to lower demand, but the unfortunate truth is that there are morons with huge disposable incomes that wouldn't bat an eye at spending $1000 on a console/new system/handheld. It's just like buying an expensive $1000 iPhone, to them.
@Hck To give people only enough money for eating and that's eat. No more "scalpers" because of people earning a lot of money.
I'm moderately interested in 3rd-party handhelds, but I've never seen anything over-marketed like this thing. What about its features justifies every Nintendo news outlet dropping previews, reviews, and follow ups about it? There are Chinese handhelds at this price that can emulate Gamecube games. It's not a prestige manufacturer, Analogue hasn't made anything to my knowledge. Are they sponsoring all this content directly?
This has a whiff of silicon valley tech speculation. Put all your budget into marketing, never scale up effectively.
Not surprised this is happening. The reviews have all been really positive. Supply is very constrained.
Mine arrived this morning. It is very, very good. The screen looks great, the dock works really well + the picture on the TV is very sharp.
When it’s unlocked + there are extra cores it will be amazing.
Analogue should have sold the first batch for $500 each then there would be no scalping

@swoose
I would say that Analogue are a prestige manufacturer and they have put out some quality hardware - I have their Super NT and I really love it. I'd recommend looking at some of their products if you haven't heard from them.
Their hardware is not for everyone though - there are definitely benefits to the Chinese handhelds you mention (like you say, GameCube) - but they aim for 100% accuracy which is rare in software emulation (I think Higan has the same aim). That's really the appeal. But that's not important to everyone (I'm fine using normal emulators for Sega stuff - I don't need complete accuracy just to play those games so I doubt I'd shell out for their Mega SG).
I wouldn't say their budget mostly goes on marketing - the FPGAs they are using are expensive and the marketing seems to be mostly done by sending review copies to YouTubers so I'd say development and production is costing them more.
How is there still a chip shortage? Figured that'd be solved by now.

@FRED_KID not sure to be honest man, it's just a derogatory term for Native Americans and other indigenous groups so that's why I say it's outdated. I mean there's even an episode of Seinfeld about it from like 1993-94 or something so it's been an issue for a long time. I just really enjoy the writing and stories on NintendoLife so wish they'd come up with something. Koopalings? Bad Bowsers? I'm not creative enough, reseller is pretty close to what they're saying for "scalper"

Good for them, if the demand is there, and the supply isn't, take advantage of people who are willing to pay for it. It's the world we live in, learn to accept it. In a perfect world, the manufacturer would just increase supply to sell it directly to the customers to make the money themselves, but for many reasons they can't. Scalping sucks, but it's the way things go.
Question for folks whose orders arrived this past week.
My Pocket works great, but the power supply for the Dock kicked the bucket two days in (the adapter portion that plugs into a wall outlet) and the screen protector shattered before I could even install it. Totally not the usual Analogue quality. Did either of these happen to you?
If it makes anyone feel better, many of the pre-order listings have been reported to Analogue (as they forgot to hide all their order info), and they've responded on Twitter to say they've cancelled them.
Analogue stated on their site that they're on the looking for anyone selling their pre-order, or ordering with bots, and that if they confirm either of those things they'll cancel the order or move them to the end of the queue.
There's absolutely nothing wrong or sickening about reselling something for any price because other people are willing to pay that much for it.
@Hck They have to make enough units but then they don't get the sold out everywhere bonus.
