Here’s a sentence that’s never been typed before Monday night: The Washington Husky football team is going to play in a national championship game.

One week from now, the Huskies will face Michigan in Houston for a national title. Of course Washington has claimed two other titles, in 1960 and 1991, prior to the advent of the College Football Playoff system. But they’ll finally have their shot in a game that definitely crowns a national champion. Let that sink in.

Husky fans might need the full week to recover from yet another heart-pounding, sweat-inducing 37-31 win in the Sugar Bowl.

As the Ringer’s Bryan Curtis pointed out on X, the Huskies held on for dear life to stave off Texas’ comeback. Texas took eight snaps within UW’s 13-yard-line in the final 80 seconds of play, coming away with 3 points.

It was befitting of UW’s high-wire act this season, which college football analyst Geoff Schwartz put in perspective. The Huskies, who own college football’s longest unbeaten streak with 21 straight victories, have turned close games into their bread and butter. UW has now won 10 games in a row by 10 points or fewer, and five straight by one score.

Are those tickers holding up, OK? Take a deep breath (or 20) and brace yourself for one more roller coaster ride next week.
