What are Add Ons and Extensions

Google Add Ons:

Add-ons are scripts that run inside Google Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Forms, but they're built by users.

Google Extensions:

Extensions are mini programs that modify and enhance the functionality of the Google Chrome browser. They extend Google Chrome’s abilities by adding a button next to the address bar, which applies to the current website being viewed.

Installing an Add On:

Google Docs, Sheets, & Slides

  1. On your computer, open a document, spreadsheet, or presentation.
  2. Click Add-ons Get add-ons.
  3. Point to an add-on to see a short description. To see a full description, click the add-on.
  4. To install the add-on, click Free.
  5. For most add-ons, a message will appear requesting access to data that the add-on needs to work. Read the message, then click Allow.

Google Forms

  1. On your computer, open a form.
  2. In the top right, click More .
  3. Click Add-ons.
  4. Point to an add-on to see a short description. To see a full description, click the add-on.
  5. To install the add-on, click Free.
  6. For most add-ons, a message will appear requesting access to data that the add-on needs to work. Read the message, then click Allow.

  2. In the top right, click More .
  3. Click Add-ons.
  4. Choose an add-on from the list.

You can turn add-ons on or off at any time:

Google Docs, Sheets, & Slides

  1. On your computer, open a document, spreadsheet, or presentation.
  2. Click Add-ons Manage add-ons.
  3. Choose an add-on from the list.
  4. Click Manage Use in this document to turn the add-on on or off.

Google Forms

  1. Open a form.
  2. In the top right, click More .
  3. Click Add-ons.
  4. Choose an add-on from the list.
  5. Click Manage Use in this document to turn the add-on on or off.

Uninstall an add-on:

To remove an add-on from all your files, uninstall it.

Google Docs, Sheets, & Slides

  1. On your computer, open a document, spreadsheet, or presentation.s
  2. Click Add-ons Manage add-ons.
  3. Choose an add-on from the list.
  4. Click Manage Remove.

To report a problem with an add-on, click Report an issue.

Google Forms

  1. Open a form.
  2. In the top right, click More .
  3. Click Add-ons.
  4. Choose an add-on from the list.
  5. Click Manage Remove.

Add an extension:

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store.
  2. In the left column, click Apps or Extensions.
  3. Browse or search for what you'd like to add.
  4. When you find an app or extension you'd like to add, click Add to Chrome.
  5. If you're adding an extension:
    1. Review the types of data that the extension will be able to access.
    2. Click Add extension.

You'll see your extensions in Chrome as buttons on the toolbar.

How extensions work:

Apps and extensions work like regular programs for desktop computers, but they run entirely in the Chrome browser. You don't need to install software or restart your computer.
