👉 Yesterday, our Secretary General Charlotte Slente visited the Azraq Camp in Jordan, home to around 41,000 Syrian refugees spread over 14.7 km². Originally established in 2014, the camp is structured around several operational villages that help foster a sense of community and ownership among its residents.
🔹 The visit began with an insightful screening discussing the current challenges faced by the refugees alongside World Food Programme, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and UNICEF. Discussions with provided firsthand insights into the impactful services provided and the pressing needs within the camp.
🔹 Moreover, the Secretary General's tour included visits to the camp’s comprehensive facilities like essential water facilities and community centres. A special focus was on the DRC-managed sites where she observed several core sector activities at the DRC community centre in village 2.
🔹 The visit also featured engaging discussions: a brief but insightful dialogue with community members, beneficiaries and DRC staff, gaining valuable feedback and insights into the daily operations and challenges in delivering aid.
🔹 The camp’s management exemplifies the collaborative efforts to provide sustainable support. The demographics, including one in three households headed by women, about 4.5% of the population living with disabilities, and an average of 100 babies born each month, highlight the dynamic nature of the camp.
🔹 This visit underscores DRC’s commitment to supporting refugees and enhancing our services to meet their evolving needs. Engagements like today’s are crucial in ensuring that our interventions are effective and meaningful.
