Last week, it was my pleasure to represent Mirror Mirror Vietnam and Transform Education at the Asia Pacific Learning Symposium - Global Working Group to End School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV) by UNESCO and UN Girls' Education Initiative (UNGEI). As one of the youth participants involved in planning this symposium, I was in charge of moderating the first Gallery Walk - an activity where participants are provided with live presentations highlighting tools and resources to prevent SRGBV from various organizations. Leading such creative activities has always been my passion in the field of gender. In addition, Transform Education had a brief but deep signature Solidarity circle - a safe space for young feminists participants. Facilitating the guided visionary exercise for a feminist future without SRGBV was my task and I loved how the circle provided youths with a friendly and reflective space within international/ regional meetings like this. Mirror Mirror Vietnam also had a booth at the second Gallery Walk where we showcased our Equali-tea set of facilitation cards. This was our award-winning initiative to bridge the gap in youth-friendly gender materials and raise youth awareness of gender-based violence in private spheres back in 2021-2022. Using a wide range of art-based and experiential learning activities in the form of a simple board game, we had the chance to pilot and shared it for free to more than 25 organizations and youth groups around Vietnam. The cards received amazing feedback in 2021-2022 and did a great job attracting interested symposium participants from all over the region in 2023. We are looking for funding and resources to continue developing its second phase this year so feel free to contact me for collaboration. During a short 2.5 days of the symposium, we learned about various tools for SRGBV prevention and intervention from all sectors, discussed the importance of inclusive and gender transformative spaces, the ethics of data collection for SRGBV, how to improve intergenerational and inter-stakeholder collaboration and many other things. What struck me was the utter need for an intersectional and collaborative approach, where youth is the center of their own agency, instead of being sole beneficiaries of gender and development projects. Grassroots organizations are crucial actors and providers of genuine community-based data in this process. It is governments, INGOs and NGOs' role to include grassroots and youths in all stages of data collection, program design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. #endSRGBV #feminism #youthempowerment #SexualHarassment #CSE #ComprehensiveSexualityEducation #SexEd #SexEducation #GBV #GenderBasedViolence #gender #education #vietnam

UPDATE: For safety reasons, you can get infromation about the list on info@feministfundforturkey.org Ezgi Kan, activist from #Turkey, in collaboration with #feminist initiatives, made this call on behalf of a group of NGO professionals and volunteers in Turkey: "... It has been almost two weeks since the #earthquake hit, and people are still struggling to access basic necessities such as food, tents, toilets, heaters, hygiene products, and medicine. Due to the absence of clean toilet facilities and basic hygiene items, which are generally not included on any list of needs, many #women are facing an increased risk of vaginal and urinary tract infections, while the stress induced by the earthquake is causing breast milk supply to stop in new mothers, resulting in malnourishment among infants. In the meantime, #LGBTIQ+ people have limited access to disaster relief services and are even afraid of requesting them due to widespread discrimination against them as well as homophobic and transphobic public services. The feminist organizations and collectives operating in the region not only work to meet the basic needs of women, LGBTIQ+s and #children, but also to create safe, gender-sensitive, LGBTQI+ friendly, and child-friendly spaces where they can be protected from all types of violence including sexual violence, and to provide psychosocial support for all, especially children." They created a list by consulting organizations on the ground, "that includes #grassroots and local initiatives in ten affected provinces, as well as larger national organizations and solidarity networks based in Istanbul whose efforts extend to the impacted regions. These organizations, initiatives, and solidarity groups possess valuable knowledge on the specific needs and challenges of women, LGBTIQ+, and children, which are often disregarded by central authorities and gender-insensitive disaster response policies. They are currently providing #urgentrelief and support on the ground with their limited resources, thanks to their strong relationships with beneficiary communities and extensive field experience. Moreover, there are only a limited number of women relief personnel in the region, which creates additional challenges for these groups to express their needs and ask for help. In order to sustain their vital and essential work and increase their impact, these organizations need your urgent financial support." For security and safety reasons, coordinating email is provided to get in touch with organizations on the ground and eliminate language barriers. Full call here: https://bit.ly/3lH43Vs

"... state powers are no more gender neutral than they are neutral with regard to class and race, such appeals involve seeking protection from masculinist institutions against men, a move more in keeping with the politics of feudalism than freedom." (Wendy Brown, 'Finding the man in the state') This quote captures exactly our concern over criminalization of gender-based violence, a topic discussed at the consultation workshop for amendment of the gender equality law. Proposed by one of the UN agencies in Vietnam, it was argued that criminalization of GBV will increase incentives for victims to report, speak up and gain justice. #2GROW, our youth-led grassroots feminist network, believes resorting to heavily-masculinist institutions and the politics of protection does not align with feminist politics and vision. Such path, as already shown by experience worldwide, will only result in further marginalization of poor women, disadvantaged men and distracting us from our real task, that is, transforming existing masculinist structures. It is our hope that this proposal will be re-considered and critically debated among all relevant actors. During the consultation workshop, 2GROW representatives also brought real-life evidence of GBV: stories of queer youths without documentation and the precarities that follow, cases of sexual abuse that have been alerted to us, violent threats sent to PRIDE organizers, etc. With such evidence, 2GROW aspire that the gender equality law will be more inclusive and encompassing. The livelihood and everyday-security of queer people, of disadvantaged men, of grassroots groups that work closely with communities depend on this amendment. #grassroots_feminism #UNFPA #UNWomen #UNDP #AustralianAid #ILO #UNICEF

Having hosted gender workshops and talks with Mirror Mirror Vietnam for the last 4 years in grassroots spaces, I never thought someday I could discuss gender norms, gender-based violence and SOGIESC at official university halls with great endorsement. Big thank you to the Department of Media & Communications - HCM University of Culture for having me last weekend.

Yesterday was the online closing day of our first grassroots, youth-led feminist forum in Vietnam. My gratitude, hope and thoughts are beyond words. Two years ago, when Nga N. told me and Mirror Mirror Vietnam team the idea of establishing a working group that shares mutual values and resources, we could barely imagine such an impressive event. Not to brag, but this team of witches (more amazing people behind the screen who couldn't join us in person) - as we'd like to call ourselves - is our biggest pride. Despite unavoidable rookie mistakes that left room for improvement, I believe the first 2GROW Forum was truly a place for real feminist reflection, constructive criticism, learning and sharing. With 20+ panels, workshops and of course, self-care sessions, it did its best with limited resources to provide 50+ young grassroots activist participants a place to belong to. This was achieved with collaboration, (lots of patience) and resilience from 3 youth organizations, including Mirror Mirror Vietnam, Vietnam Organization for Gender Equality, Y-PEER Vietnam and super cool feminist activists/mentors. This is not the end of an era, as we plan to do so much things after the first convening. Opportunities like this really strengthen my belief in a better picture of equitable partnerships and of course, grassroots activism.
