We are one of 28 signatories of a joint open letter to the Prime Minister expressing our deep sadness and concern as the Safety of Rwanda Bill becomes law. The signatories include survivors of modern slavery and NGOs working to end human trafficking. This law does not only disregard expert advice, but it will make people more vulnerable to trafficking, exploitation and dangerous transit routes. We refuse to stand for it. We urge the UK Government to reverse the Act, for the sake of modern slavery survivors. Our Private Sector Adviser, Eloise Savill, writes about the risks of modern slavery for workers displaced by conflict in the latest edition of the Anti-Trafficking Review with Suzanne Hoff from La Strada International If you want to learn more about our advice for businesses on developing human rights due diligence to protect and support displaced workers, please see our guidance document here: https://lnkd.in/ej33autN or contact Eloise at e.savill@antislavery.org
An article I wrote, alongside Suzanne Hoff at La Strada International , has been published in the special issue "Armed Conflicts: Migration, Trafficking, and Labour Markets" of the Anti-Trafficking Review. This presents some of the findings from our research on the risks of modern slavery for workers displaced by conflict, using case studies from consultations with civil society in countries with a high influx of people displaced by the ongoing war in Ukraine: Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Moldova, Poland and Romania. We outline some of our recommendations for businesses from our guidance, to inform due diligence activities to prevent and remediate exploitation of displaced people. It was a pleasure as always to collaborate with Suzanne on this, and I really appreciate the Anti-Trafficking Review for highlighting our work. Many thanks to editor Borislav Gerasimov, guest-editor Mónica Hurtado Lozano and the rest of the Anti-Trafficking Review team. Read the article here:

📢 JUST NOW: The EU Parliament votes in favour of the groundbreaking Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD), a historic law aimed at eradicating forced labour from global supply chains. This marks the second monumental victory against forced labour this week. This law is a game-changer, and today’s EU Parliament vote sets it in motion. The CSDDD law could have a tremendous impact on the 17.3 million people estimated to be in forced labour in the private sector and the estimated 3.9 million people exploited in state-imposed forced labour. Despite highly disappointing last-minute hurdles, including political wrangling from member states like Germany, Italy and France that resulted in the law being watered down, the EU Parliament's vote today underscores a firm commitment to human rights. The CSDDD, alongside the Forced Labour Regulation, which the EU parliament agreed on earlier this week, mandates companies to conduct thorough human rights and environmental due diligence throughout their supply chains. These laws serve as an example to countries around the world that true progress toward ending forced labour in supply chains is achievable. 👏 We applaud the progress on this important law and congratulate all of the politicians, business advocates, workers, and members of civil society who made it a reality. Together, let's continue to champion human rights and pave the way for a fairer, more equitable future. We are devastated to see that the #RwandaBill has passed in the UK Parliament today and will now become law. This law will undoubtedly make people more vulnerable to trafficking, exploitation and dangerous transit routes. We refuse to stand for it. 📢 We urgently need to rebuild our broken system to place people and their rights at its core.

📢🆕 BREAKING: The EU agrees to introduce a far-reaching law to prevent the import and trade of goods made with forced labour. The Parliament’s final adoption marks a historic moment as the EU takes a stand against forced labour and finally sets the law in motion. The decision anti-slavery allies have been waiting for was made today, as EU lawmakers voted in favour of the Forced Labour Regulation, a broad law to eradicate forced labour from supply chains across the EU. The vote marks the final stage before the law is translated and is anticipated to come into force in three years' time. While the law is missing key provisions that would have heightened its effectiveness, it could have a positive impact on workers and prevent perpetrators from profiting from human rights abuses. It could also offer consumers the assurance of ethically sourced products. For the Forced Labour Regulation to have the greatest impact, victims of forced labour must be able to access remedy for harm. We will continue to work closely with the EU and civil society as this law comes into effect, to make sure that workers’ rights are respected and that frameworks for accessing remedy are established. This is an important milestone towards eradicating forced labour worldwide, setting a precedent for other nations, including the UK, to follow suit. The law is designed to go hand in hand with the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD), which is due to be voted on in Parliament later this week. Together, these laws will send a powerful message to workers worldwide that the EU will not stand for forced labour.
