My team at Foundation for Ecological Security (FES) is looking for interns interested in a research opportunity focused on rigorous qualitative analysis. The project covers Commons, agency and leadership in the context of rural communities through the lens of gender and intersectionality. The interns need to be comfortable with living and travelling in rural areas and be proficient in qualitative data collection and analysis. It's a paid opportunity and interns will get a chance to work with a diverse team of Indian and international researchers from FES, IFPRI and Bioversity Alliance-CIAT. What is it like to be a single woman in India's small towns and cities that we hear and know little of? Whether single, widowed, separated or divorced; these women have carved a resilient existence in a society that still has very rigid social norms that place men as the protectors and providers of women. Sharda works hard to provide for her children after her husband's death, but still faces pressure from family and friends to remarry. Shaayda married at 14 and found true friendship in her short-lived marriage, but is now content being an independent woman. Sangeeta's difficult marriage left her scars, but she regained her confidence and self-respect after her divorce. Mamta fought for love but chose to remain single and built a successful career as a teacher, finding fulfilment without traditional marriage. Fatima witnessed her sister's traumatic marriage, leading to her distrust of marriage and preference for living life on her own terms. To mark women’s history month, we bring you stories of five single women from rural Uttar Pradesh who live outside the urban imagination and are navigating singlehood by dodging the _log kya kahenge_ (what will people say) syndrome and choosing to maintain a laser focus on building a future for themselves and their loved ones.
