The true story of the relationship between Alan Bennett and the singular Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who ‘temporarily’ parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years.

So I watched this over at my parents and my mom thought Alan Bennett was really a set of twins the whole time

I took my mother to see The Lady In The Van. On leaving the cinema, her first remark was,
"I didn't know Alan Bennett was gay?"
It's a naive enough remark, but she then went one better by adding
"I thought the men coming round the house were doing jobs for him?"
It's the kind of maternal comment that Bennett has made a career from. But if that means my mum has now become an 'Alan Bennett Mother', what does that make me?
Fans of the National Treasure himself will lap this up, after all it has Bennett's wonderful dialogue and sly, deadpan humour and there's the familiarity of having it directed by his long time NT collaborator Nicholas Hytner.…

I watched this film two days ago and I'm still not sure what I thought of it. I enjoyed myself watching it, but ultimately I wonder about the argument this film is making.
Somewhere I read that Alan Bennett said this story, in whatever its incarnation, is a story about how society dehumanises people living in poverty. I agree with that, and think it's an important statement to make, but Miss Shepherd in this film is not only poor, she also appears to suffer from a mental disorder of some sort, and she's seen as "a bit batty" by the characters in the film.
Miss Shepherd's confusion is never fully addressed, I think - and while I'm glad this film…

I've never been induced to rolling my eyes this many times watching a single film, but The Lady in the Van managed to leave me angered from beginning to end at the sheer amount of nothingness that took place on the screen. It's essentially a movie that relies so much on its quirks to fill up the running time, but the very problem is that there really is no motif behind most of this, hence adding a sheer sense of dullness that only grew to such an aggravating degree, and whilst it may appear harmless, what's provided is truly a most insufferable experience.

Films really have got to stop forcing unexpected James Corden appearances on me. I didn't sign up for this shit, fucking stop it.
Still, it's only a cameo and the rest of The Lady in the Van is great. I will say that I think I've had enough of the reality / fiction self-referential stuff that was mastered by 24 Hour Party People. Too many films are doing this now and while it generally works in Nicholas Hytner's film, I also don't think it really needed it to work, nor two Alan Bennetts for that matter.
