Hayden Family #1

The Patriot

Rate this book
Author Jennifer Millikin delivers an emotional and riveting small town, second chance romance about a broken man and the woman who can fix him, if only he'll let her. I'm a soldier.
A cattle rancher.
A Hayden. My family's legacy is spread out in front of me, just waiting for me to seize it. If it weren't for one outdated rule, I'd be the owner of the Hayden Cattle Company and my aging father could retire. When Dakota Wright shows up to buy and develop twenty acres of Hayden land, I see more than a pretty mouth and strawberry blonde hair. I see a way around the decree keeping me from getting what I want. And, as luck would have it, Dakota has a big problem of her own. We strike two one for the land, and a second that'll make both our problems a distant memory. It isn't too long before I realize I'm in over my head. I've convinced myself the ends should justify the means, but everything begins to fall apart when my birthright is no longer all that I'm after. I never thought there'd be anything I could love more than my ranch and my country.
I was wrong. Turns out, I want it all.
Including her.

*Author's The Hayden Family series is standalone, but starting from the first book is recommended for maximum enjoyment.

It took long enough to read this, partly because of my slump and partly because in my humble opinion it was a too simplistic story.

It was a sweet small town and ranch story about second chance (you could say that, but they only had one encounter five years prior to the story) romance.

I felt there was some depth missing from the characters development, they felt a bit flat to me and although the story wasn’t bad, I kept missing something more.

I’m still giving the rest of the series a chance. I love a good brothers series, and I still have three more to go, so let’s see what this author has in store for us.

THE PATRIOT (Hayden Family Book #1) by Jennifer Millikin is the start of a new contemporary cowboy romance series that has everything I am looking for in an emotional romance read.

Hayden Cattle Company is the largest spread in Sierra Grande and was established and run by four generations of Hayden men. Beau Hayden and his wife have three grown sons and one teenage daughter.

Wes Hayden is the oldest son and after serving three tours in the Army overseas has returned to take his place on the ranch. But the Wes who went to war is not the same Wes who has returned. Beau has decided to sell of a small portion of land next to the town and he wants Wes to decide between the prospective buyers and their plans for the land.

Dakota Wright has returned home and gone to work in her father’s company Wright Build + Design. He has decided to bid on the Sierra Grande land and development and he tells Dakota that he wants her to design and lead the project.

When Wes and Dakota come together, they not only realize they have already met and more, but they may be able to help each other with the other’s problem. They discover that what drew them together five years ago is still there. What started out as a business deal just may turn into something much more permanent.

I absolutely love Wes and Dakota! Wes has a big loving family, but after a terrible incident in his third deployment, he comes back to the ranch and closes himself off from family and friends while suffering with PTSD. Dakota has a lot of guilt going on in her own life which may be why she can see it in Wes and she can get through to Wes unlike others. The H/h tell the story in alternating chapters and even when it is difficult, they maturely handle problems with communication or action. These two characters work through a lot of heart wrenching emotions, but it is all worth it for the satisfying HEA. The sex scenes are brief and not extremely explicit, but not G-rated either. All the secondary characters are fully fleshed and bring the family and the other small town citizens to life. I am looking forward to reading the siblings’ stories in future books.

I can highly recommend this contemporary cowboy romance!

DNF at 60%.

I tried, I really did but I was SO bored.
The writing was kinda weird with a lot of telling and not enough showing.
The MCs were in their late 30ties(I know for sure the H had 37 ys) but they acted like teenagers who don't know how to express their thoughts and I was half way through and there was only ONE awkward kiss. (and ONS 5 years ago which was not shown ofc)🤦‍♀️
I couldn't feel any chemistry or connection between them.
If I wanted a slowburn I would picked something from MZ.

4 “cowboy, take me away” stars

I am undoubtedly a sucker for a good cowboy/farm romance (even better if it’s a series) as I am for a good fake relationship trope. So for my first JM book, I’m a happy camper on the whole. (More on that in a bit.)

Just the same, The Patriot(book one of the Hayden family series) is not without a few hiccups, however.
- Probably most notably for me, the beginning did not get off to the greatest start. The first chapter(second overall) from the hero/Wes’ POV felt so forced to me. Imho it read more akin to a rough draft/maybe it was a couple of edits away from the one making the final cut. Simply - the writing was a bit stilted (I felt this about the writing another time or two later on, but not so severe) & Wes seemed more like a basic cliché type than an actual man. So much so my concern reared early for this book being a DNF had the writing continued this route. I’m glad I decided to give a longer chance because soon enough the writing settled down & found a natural flow. I was engaged pretty much the rest of the way.
- Dakota’s idea of as some sort of atonement for her own perceived “sins”. I understand for the sake of the trope, Dakota needed to get something besides romance out of her initial arrangement with Wes, but to go to the lengths of is kinda ridiculous imho.
- It wasn’t a lot, but I would’ve preferred to have been shown a little more than told early on in their fake engagement with a few moments, or wished some moments were expanded upon.

Back to the good stuff…
- Once Dakota & Wes were face to face again & the book found its groove after a few chapters, my initial view of Wes did almost a 180. I enjoyed the complexity of what Wes actually turned out to be as a strong, grumpy man’s man cowboy/ex-military yet at his core he’s pretty damn vulnerable too after his last tour of duty. Between his PTSD & him feeling so genuinely unlovable, the man gave my heartstrings more than one or two big tugs. He could be so sweet & tender too, just for Dakota.
- Dakota is a pretty good heroine. She’s fun with some feistiness. She’s also sweet & open - ready to support Wes through his struggles. I wouldn’t have minded if as a couple, they would’ve delved a bit more into her own struggles with guilt too.
- I liked how the longer Dakota was there in town she was putting down roots of her own & finding her niche beyond the progression of her relationship with Wes. As well as helping Wes make real adjustments to being a civilian again. Because he’d been hiding behind the ranch before she came to town. Yet she still gave him shit if he deserved it once in a while.
- Wes’ brothers. I’m definitely interested in Warner’s book, but what made Wyatt the way he is is really what’s tugging my curiosity the hardest. I look forward to going back to the Hayden ranch soon.

Fake engagement anyone?
This story is so much more than what the eyes can see. It’s packed with everything from all the ups and downs of a big farm family to the ptsd moments and life after the army for our hero and of course, the chance at a beautiful romance that it’s not missing all suspenseful twists and bumps in her way to that happily ever after.

From the synopsis I knew this was a typical romance with a cliche plot, but I was in the mood for a ranch setting so I read it.

I’m so glad I did, I totally enjoyed it.

Wes came back after 12 years of serving in the army a different man, he is suffering from BTSD but he is not letting any one in.
He loves nothing more than the family ranch and now his dad is ready to hand it over but there is a condition and Wes can’t meet it.
Dakota is trying to rebuild her life and prove herself to her Dad, so when he asks her to take over a project she agrees.
Only problem is the Lake Guy from five years ago is a part of it, he ghosted her before what is she going to do now.

What I loved about this book is the family dynamics, I loved how both their families where involved in the story and I loved the ranch setting.
I loved the relationship development between Wes and Dakota, they grew cosy and comfortable with each other it was very nice to read.
I like it when I feel with the characters.

I really like that there was no misunderstanding, they actually talked about it.

Yes there were those cliche moments, but the overall feel of the book was so good that I didn’t mind much.

Also the writing was good and Dakota was a very interesting character.

I’m actually looking forward to continue with the series.

Wowza!! The Patriot was everything I didn't know I wanted in a book! Actually, I did know I wanted it, but you rarely find it. Wes is the eldest of the four Hayden children. He fought for his country for twelve years and is still carrying the battle scars from it. Their family owns a huge ranch, which is the main focus of the town. So, everyone knows who they are.

I loved the cowboy/veteran combination. It's my "book catnip." A cowboy with all the ruggedness combined with emotional trauma of a vet who saw horrible things. Truly, this gave me a little of a "Yellowstone" vibe and I absolutely was in heaven while I read it.

Wes meets up with Dakota. They shared a one night stand. However, what they each brought away from that night was very different. When they meet up again, Wes is enamored and Dakota is upset. They have to work through the misunderstanding surrounding Wes' reasons for leaving that night before they can move ahead.

Of course, Dakota is carrying her own hurts. She blames herself for two heartbreaking events in her life and is punishing herself and trying to do some type of penance. This heartbreak makes her a prisoner of her pain as her actions continue to hurt her over and over.

This book is definitely a perfect mix of wonderful characters, a fantastic setting and emotional storyline. I enjoyed every bit of it and cannot wait for the next book in the series!!

Finding rare gems among the sea of books feels like my favourite person plucked a star straight from the sky just for me. The Patriot is my newest treasure.

It took me one page to be sucked into the world of Dakota and Wes. In the sea of bodies they looked straight into each others eyes and their world stopped. And so did mine. I felt every look, every word, and every touch. As if I was Dakota.

I couldn't have loved them more. Whatever they did, whatever they went through, I held my breath and anticipated their next move. Their story was both emotional and heart-wrenching.

The writing style feels effortless and titanic at the same time.

The Patriot is the undisputed masterpiece. It's beauty is endless.

[ I received a physical copy for an honest review]

The Patriot
is the start of a new romance series by Jennifer Millikin. The series will follow each of the Hayden siblings and if they are anything like this first book it will be a series full of emotion.

After three tours in the military Wes returns home to his family's ranch a different man than he was. When his father decides to sell part of the land he finds himself face to face with Dakota. RTE woman he spent one night with five years ago and impacted him more than she'll ever know. The connection is still there, so he decides to use it to his advantage and hers. He offers her a deal that would guarantee him to inherit his family's ranch and a way for her to wipe her debt clean. When buried feelings rise to the surface their the arrangement is more complicated than it started as.

"I want to reach out. Hold her. Touch her, Kiss her the way I did that evening in the lake."

The Patriot
packs more than a few tropes into its pages. We have the fake fiancé/ marriage of convenience trope, tortured war hero, somewhat second chance situation going on and it's all set to a nice slow burn. Wes is quality book boyfriend material. With his love for his family, care for his ranch, his vulnerability and his protectiveness. I loved Dakota she is such a strong female lead. She doesn't take crap or skirt around the issues when it comes to Wes and their one night encounter. She definitely doesn't let him get away with his actions easily. At the same time she knows when to be supportive and just be there for him when he needs it. The relationship between is a perfectly paced slow burn as they get to know each other better and their "fake" relationship grows into something real.

"I'll go anywhere with you." To your cabin. To your favorite place in the world. To the place inside where you hide your pain.

I think The Patriot was a fantastic start to a new series. I think Jennifer Millikin did a great job at introducing the other Hayden siblings and leaving us wanting for them each to find their own happily ever afters.

I have some mixed feelings about the story of Wes and Dakota. The story is told in dual POV and we have a few chapters told in alternating timelines as the main characters meet initially 5 years previously. Wes has served 12 years in the Army in the Middle East and suffers from PTSD. He keeps to himself and he is a brooding hero. Dakota deals with guilt over past decisions and she's in a bad place in her life. But she is a strong, independent and smart heroine. When she and Wes reconnect by accident, he fakes not knowing her. They later have to work together and end up in a fake dating / possible marriage of convenience situation.
One one side, I liked that the story deals with PTSD more than other military romances I've read. I also liked the small town cowboy side of the story. I kept imagining Wes talking with an accent. 😀
However, I didn't like their meet cute 5 years prior because they had this instant love connection that also contaminated the present and I hate this trope outside paranormal romance. Also, the characters could have been more fleshed out and the pacing a bit faster. A lot of reactions and emotions were told instead of showed and were inconsistent with the characters (most of all Dakota).
I liked that the drama at 85% was not related to miscommunication but there was an element of suspense added to the story at it was done well.
All in all an ok read but I'm not sure I'll go on with the series.

Safety: triggers for PTSD, no explicit scenes, this is a clean romance.

4.25 stars- THE PATRIOT is the first instalment in Jennifer Millikin’s contemporary, adult HAYDEN FAMILY romance series focusing on the Hayden siblings (Wesley, Warner, Wyatt and Jessie). This is thirty-seven year old, former US army explosive specialist and rancher Wes Hayden, and real estate developer/ investor Dakota Wright’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Wes and Dakota) THE PATRIOT follows Dakota Wright as she is tasked by her father with purchasing and developing several acres of land owned by the wealthy and powerful Hayden Cattle Company in Sierra Grande, Arizona but the surprise is on our heroine when she discovers that her one-night stand from five years previous is none other than heir to the Hayden Cattle Company Wes Hayden. Struggling to maintain her professionalism Dakota comes to realize that Wes refuses to acknowledge what was, and struggles to accept the sale of some of the family land. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Wes and Dakota, and the potential fall-out as the Hayden Cattle Company has been targeted for sins of the past, and our heroine is caught in the cross-fire.

Wes Hayden struggles with PTSD, and his one-night stand five years earlier with Dakota Wright has left our hero with issues of guilt and embarrassment in the wake of his need to run. Reconnecting with Dakota brought with it the palpable sexual attraction to a woman he believes he does not deserve but an outdated family mandate forces Wes to make Dakota an offer she cannot refuse.

The relationship between Wes and Dakota is one of immediate attraction; a second chance romance wherein five years has past, and Dakota struggles to forgive the ma with whom she will fall in love. Wes returned from three tours of duty a changed man, and in this, his family worries that Wes is no longer the son to take over the ranch. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including Dakota’s father Mitch Wright; Wes’ siblings Warner, Wyatt and Jessie; their parents Beau and Juliette Hayden; real estate agent Jericho Barnett; café server Josephine; several townies, and ranch hands Dixon, Troy, Josh, Ham, Denny and Bryce. I am hoping the author has plans for Josephine as well.

THE PATRIOT is a story of family and relationships; betrayal and revenge; guilt and acceptance; romance and love. The premise is heart breaking, engaging and captivating ;the romance is seductive and sensual; the characters are broken, impassioned, and dynamic.

A new series from Ms. Millikin! A great beginning to a small-town romance, featuring Wes and Dakota. She is from Colorado, and her family buys a piece of the Hayden Ranch to develop. The Hayden’s are royalty in Sierra Grande, yet it takes Dakota to show him the town. The layers to the characters are complex, and both Wes and Dakota have their own struggles. They both live with guilt and grief. As they spend time together as part of their arrangement, all can see how they feel. Will they figure it out in time?

This is the first book I've read by this author and I was hooked from the first page. There was an instant connection between the two main characters, Wes and Dakota, when they first met. You could feel how they were drawn together, and it was sad that it was just a one night stand. But as fate would have it, they were brought together several years later when her father's firm is vying to purchase a portion of the Hayden Family land for development.

I loved how the story unfolded in regards to Wes and Dakota's relationship, getting our first look at the rest of the Hayden family and their dynamics, the community of Sierra Grande, and discovering Wes's and Dakota's take on their initial meeting. There is a good mix of humor and some suspense in the story. It is always a pleasure to discover a new to me author whose stories are well-written and complete. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the remainder of this series.

“Small town romance” describes this book perfectly; though it doesn’t begin to encompass the depth of emotions the two main characters have been through and continue to struggle with. Fate introduces Dakota and Wes in a pivotal time in both their lives, they struggle with their own demons and mistakes, and after years apart, fate brings them back together to give them another chance.

I really applaud Milliken’s take on the standard cowboy romance and giving Wes a twist in being a veteran and the emotions he struggles with in coming home and adjusting to civilian life. Yet Dakota isn’t without her own struggles. Sure, some of it comes a bit easy to them, but not everything, which makes it intriguing to the end. The twist of the proposition took me by surprise, and wasn’t something I would have chosen to see, but it makes you keep going to see if they allow themselves to start to fall for each other, or if it’ll backfire on them for good. I think it’s a good contemporary romance novel, and look forward to seeing what will happen with the other Hayden men of the family.

I love a story where you are jumping back and forth, ie, past present and so forth. The story line where your kids have to marry to get the land is a story line I've read before, and makes for an interesting storyline. Two people work towards a goal to get the same thing. Like the love story. HEA.

I decided to try a new author, and since this was a new series, I knew it was the perfect time to give both a try. Glad I did.
Wes Hayden is back home ready to take over his family’s ranch. But things are not easy.
Dakota Wright shows up at the ranch wanting to purchase 20 acres of the Hayden land. Imagine her shock to see the guy she met 5 years ago .
Both have their agenda and strike a deal, but what happens when feelings develop and what they thought they wanted, might not be what they really want?
The plot was engaging and the characters complex and perfect in their imperfections.
A series that promises to be a real winner.

Wes Hayden is one scrumptious hero - an Army veteran and a rugged solemn cowboy. His relationship with Dakota started 5 years ago when he first meet her at a lake house party held by one of his friends they spent an amazing afternoon and night together before he left while she was sleeping. Now she comes to his hometown with her dad looking to purchase property his dad is selling from their family ranch.

Their reconnection is quite the story and as the book unfolds so much happens. This book has a number of well written characters that the author can write future books about. This book is as much about Wes and Dakota finding love together while agreeing to a marriage of convenience as it is about both of them fulfilling their potential. Wes is dealing with PTSD from his tours in the Middle East as an EOD specialist (bomb squad) and Dakota is delaying with the emotional fallout from her mother’s death and a past relationship where she discovered she had been involved with a married man.

The character development happens slowly and realistically. I enjoyed seeing Dakota explore the town and develop friendships with the town citizens. She helps Wes rediscover his town and people he has known all his life.

I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This one started a little too slow for my taste and was very lack luster until around 70% in. Not a lot going on and I ended up taking several days to read it. But once we got to the last 30%, it got better and I was pleasantly surprised with the turn of events. I mean, I kind of figured how some things would come to play out, but it was still a good, strong finish. It even had me interested in the books that will follow for the Hayden men. I am definitely glad I read it after how it finished. I need a book like that every now and then to balance out all the angsty ones I am used to reading lately. I will be checking out more of this author's work. .All in all, a good, 4 star read by a new to me author.

My Rating: 4.5 stars!

**ARC was generously provided by the author in exchange for my honest review.**

I’m giddy with enthusiasm… why? Because I’m pretty sure this new-to-me author just caught my attention with The Patriot!

When I initially signed for an advanced copy I assumed (based on the blurb) that it’s a simple contemporary romance set out in the countryside. You know the usual… the cowboy and the city girl meet, fall in love and the rest is history. 🤷‍♀️

Whilst that short summary may be somewhat true, it doesn’t even skim the surface. This story offered so much more than what I had bargained for. The world-building alongside the character development that organically grew throughout is what made this book a phenomenal read in my books. The picture Millikin paints is so vivid and in-depth that I couldn’t help but find myself immensely invested in both Wes and Dakota’s lives.

When they’re first introduced, it seems like they don’t have a care in the world. An initial attraction pulls them towards each other and they have one magical night.

Fast forward to the present day, and that carefree night together seems like a million lightyears away. That is until they unexpectedly see each other again and old feelings and memories come flooding back.

I was hooked from the moment they made contact. Lol. I can’t put into words how much Millikin’s writing was all-consuming, addictive, and realistic. It’s a work of fiction that readers can easily connect with because the troubles that both Wes and Dakota struggle with are relatable and effects so much of our population.

Despite their personal issues, I love that they find solace in one other. They may not necessarily be willing to help themselves per se, but it doesn’t stop them from wanting or even trying to help lift some of the burden the other has on their shoulders. You cannot dislike either one of these protagonists. They’re going through hardships, they’re stubborn, secretive, and even closed off at times (especially Wes), but it’s evident that their good people and their hearts are in the right place.

Such a wholesome, heartwarming love story — and one that’s ingrained with strong family bonds and values. In this day and age (and maybe it’s also a generational thing), I find it almost a dying breed to see people who have still have strong morals and beliefs that have been passed on and taught from their parents and grandparents.

Wes is a pure gentleman. Almost an old soul (but maybe it’s due to the fact that he’s already lived such a life in his thirty-plus years). There’s no bullshitting with him. He’s determined, loyal, protective, and what I found most appealing despite his struggles, is he’s still the type of guy who know will have your back.

Dakota is a lighter personality. She’s dealing with her own issues but for the most part, she’s friendly and understanding, and full of potential she doesn’t know she has. She can be bubbly (but not in the ditzy sort of way), and her internal dialogue is a hoot! 🤭

They work so well together. A balance I found so endearing. If you enjoy reading slow burn romances and/or a fake relationships trope, then I highly recommend you give this book a go. I can tell you now, Millikin’s Hayden Family series is definitely one I’m looking forward to continuing.

There are secondary characters in here that are just as intriguing. The Hayden family are seen as enigmatic royalties in their town. Each sibling having strong personalities of their own. As much as I enjoyed Wes and Dakota’s growing relationship, I don’t think it would’ve been the same feels without either one of their families as supporting characters in their journey (not to mention their banter would surely be missed). 😜

This is my first book of Millikin’s so I don’t have any of her previous books to compare it with, but I found her writing style effortless to follow. It’s well-paced storytelling that constantly kept me engaged. There’s a nice break of light in between the darkness so it doesn’t have that overall heavy emotional feeling.

Wes struggles with mental and emotional scarring that I thought was handled with a lot of care and sensitivity. His story brought awareness to these issues and the struggles men and women can go through when they’ve been in similar situations.

Both Wes and Dakota internally struggle with guilt that they’ve been carrying around with them, and through their journey they gradually share and open themselves to finding happiness again. Aw sigh. It’s a truly heartwarming story of love and healing, with strong family ties and friendships. I couldn’t put it down, and finishing it only made me eager to read the next books in the series.

Small Town Setting: ✔
Cowboys: ✔
Slow Burn Romance: ✔
Fake Relationship: ✔

It’s books like this one that make me want to read more contemporary romances. Loved it, and I would happily recommend it to any romance reader looking for a good ol’ fashion happily ever after!

He holds out his hand again, and this time I know it's for me. My hand sinks into his, and when our skin touches the goose bumps covering me turn into tiny fires. But these flames? They feel so very good.
His eyes widen just the tiniest amount. His lower lip peels away from his upper, leaving a thin space between them. A flash of fear darts across his face.
"Wes," he grits, as if his name can barely make it past other words stuck in his throat.
"Dakota." My voice trembles, which is fitting, because at this moment it feels as if there's an earthquake shaking me from the inside out.
He tugs gently, bringing me closer.
It's inevitable.
This. Us.
I step into his arms, and it doesn't feel new. It feels like the place where I belong, and am only late arriving to.

The Patriot is the first book in the Hayden Family series, written by one of my favorite contemporary romance authors, Jennifer Millikin, and it's also the first cowboy romance I've read. Generally, the pace of the main characters', Wes and Dakota's, story was great so it was pretty easy to dive right into it in the first few chapters. I adored their natural, instant-click moment when they met for the first time five years ago. Despite the fact that it seemed like a one-night stand to me, deep down I knew it was much more meaningful than that. Fate had brought them together years later, and I simply appreciated the way they gradually sorted things out...even though they didn't have a pleasant reunion.

Undoubtedly, this story was beautifully written with a touch of emotion--mainly grief and PTSD symptoms--since Wes was a veteran who'd been through several wars and witnessed the brutal death of his own comrades/innocent victims. However, I personally thought Wes and Dakota's story lacked the "umph," the extra dynamite for it to better exploit its full potential. I mean, everything was unfolded smoothly and almost expectedly throughout the book, but there was just something missing and I found myself constantly looking forward to a twist in the plot which just never came.

Thankfully, there are still three more installments in this series and I have high hopes for the rest of the Hayden family's stories. The Patriot is still a good read and I'm glad to discover some cowboy romance through my favorite author. If you liked contemporary romance, I'd recommend picking this book up and Jennifer's previous works. :)

I always love a small town romance, and this man is full of all the things I love a small town community, the ranch family, and of course are romance. This one is a marriage of convenience, fake engagement, second chance romance to encompass its tropes. I love the romance was to hurting people coming together and through their romance the two of them helped each other on the path to healing.

There was only two things I feel were slightly missing from this particular book the first one was more of the running of the ranch. I want to see a bit more personality from the ranch hands and I feel that we got to see more of Dakota’s work life than actual running of the ranch. Secondly, I would have liked Dakota’s dad to be slightly more involved with the healing process, I feel like we get to see him at the beginning and then you very much dropped off the radar of the story would be nice for him to even just popped in with a couple more phone calls in the course of the story. However there are two minor things I really enjoyed this romance!

This is the 1st in a new series and is Wes and Dakota’s journey. Wes is the eldest of the Hayden family and is a veteran who spend 12-years fighting for his country and understandably carries baggage and is struggling to settle back into life as a civilian. Dakota has her won demons, and she want to but 20-acres of Hayden land to develop it. These two are drawn to each other and spend a night together. They strike a deal which is one the land, and second to mutually benefit them both and which will ensure all their problem go away. This is a beautifully written story which is an emotional roller coaster, unconditional family love and support, suspense, twists, and love. I was totally enthralled throughout this riveting and addictive page turner, and I cannot wait to read more from this talented author whose work I recommend for all readers.

Wes Hayden had one night with the woman of his dreams five years ago, but now she is here on his ranch. The oldest Hayden brother and heir to the Hayden Cattle Company, he is still recovering from his time in the military. In order to inherit the ranch, he must be married, but until he is able to deal with his PTSD, he will not inflict his issues on a wife. When Dakota Wright and her father show up on the ranch to purchase land, for development, he will ensure that they get the bid and hopefully there will be another chance for him. Dakota remains on site to ensure the development is exactly what the community wants and needs. A beautiful romance between two people who are both struggling with their pasts, but are given a second chance for their future and love. A fake relationship and a second chance. A former military hero scarred by what he’s seen and a heroine trying to rebuild her life while carrying more guilt than is hers to own. It’s all wrapped up in the author’s signature deeply complex emotional style. The personalities jumped from the page. I couldn’t help but cheer for them through their challenges and triumphs. Wes and Dakota’s story introduces us to the whole Hayden family, and I think I’m a little bit in love with the whole lot of them already. I’m anxiously waiting for the next book of the series.
