About the Author

Hi, I’m Judith. Welcome!

I’m the author of “Inspirations from Abroad for a Happier Life at Home,” a book that draws from living experiences in nine countries across the globe and that aims to provide inspirations to live a happier, more joyful, balanced, and fulfilling everyday life at home, no matter where in the world you live.

I left Germany at the age of 19 to go discover the world and have since lived quite a nomadic lifestyle. I still love going back to Germany and having my roots over there. At the same time, I have always loved to travel, to get to know other countries, cultures and people, and to learn by exchanging with people from countries across the globe.

Interested in other countries, cultures, and international relations, I decided to pursue a Bachelor degree in ‘European Studies’ at Maastricht University in my early 20s.

I was then more and more fascinated to learn about
countries around the world and continued to specialize myself with a Master’s and then a Ph.D. degree in ‘Development Studies’ at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.

Most of my academic research dealt with human development in its various forms, global health issues, and inequalities. In the framework of my research, I conducted extensive field researches on related topics in Mexico and in India.

I identify as a global citizen and have had the chance to visit nearly 50 countries across the globe.

I love learning languages, trying out different cuisines, and learning about different life philosophies in different parts of the world. While there are differences between countries, customs, belief systems etc., I have also found that deep inside, most people around the world strive for very similar things, and that wonderful, inspiring connections can be made if we focus on what unites us and realize that different ways of life can lead to similar results.

My intention is to make a contribution to intercultural learning and appreciation; and to explore tools that can make everyday life more joyful, balanced, and fulfilling.

‘Inspirations from Abroad for a Happier Life at Home’ is my first book and is available on Amazon in various formats.

More about the Book...

‘Inspirations from Abroad for a Happier Life at Home’ is a personal travel-memoir about the nine countries I once called home.

Having met and observed people from around the world, I believe that each country, each culture, and each person has something beautiful to offer and to share with the world. In the book, I share my reflections on some of the things that I appreciated a lot in each country I have lived in.

My aim with the book is to reflect on and share the positive things (mindsets, customs, values, lessons etc.) that I learned in each of the nine countries.

The countries in the book include:

My home country, Germany, the U.S. (Portland, Oregon), where I spent a semester as an exchange student; Mexico (Hidalgo), where I completed a voluntary social service, the Netherlands (Maastricht), where I absolved my undergraduate studies; France (Montpellier and Aix-en-Provence), where I continued my studies; Switzerland (Geneva and surroundings), where I earned my Master’s and Ph.D. degree in ‘Development Studies’; India (Tamil Nadu and Kerala), where I conducted research for my Ph.D. thesis; China (Beijing), where I moved together with my newly married Swiss husband, and Japan (Tokyo), where our first daughter was born.

The book puts the lens on the positive sides that each country in this world has to offer, pointing out different concepts, mindsets etc. that I appreciated very much in each country I lived.

A variety of personal development tools – many from the positive psychology movement – are integrated  when discussing the topics. One of the main goals of the book is to provide inspirations for living a more joyful, balanced, and fulfilling everyday life.

Each chapter ends with a box of ‘beautiful lessons learned’ and concrete ideas on how we can integrate inspiring mindsets etc. in our own lives.

‘Inspirations from Abroad for a Happier Life at Home’ is available on Amazon in various formats.
