How to get better at public speaking: real life edition. I used to go bright red when I spoke up in the school classroom. Red like a tomato. And everyone used to tell me I was red like a tomato (cheers kids). I would pretend I didn't know the answers just to avoid speaking in public. If someone had told me that one day I'd be regularly presenting my creative ideas to heaps of people at a brand like Gymshark, I'd have hid under a rock. Not only that, but if someone told me that public speaking would become one of my strongest attributes, I'd have laughed myself silly. Little shy me. Sooooo, what changed? Well, the thing is, shy people are really good at observing.  I spent my time watching people speak. Ted Talks, confident students at uni, seniors at work. And I noticed something. The speakers I enjoyed the most were the ones who made the viewers feel 100% relaxed. The ones who were clear and concise and confident. Sometimes, a little bit funny. Ultimately, the ones who were the most 'real'. I decided I had no choice but to be a good speaker, for the sake of my career. I knew that I absolutely did NOT want to get held back because people couldn't buy into my creative ideas, or me.  I wanted people to see me as confident, passionate and a great storyteller. Every time I had a presentation, I'd practise and practise and practise out loud, so that I knew the material pretty well. I'd add speaker notes, just in case I lost my way. I visualised myself as confident, passionate and a great storyteller, every single time. And I reminded myself that if I seemed uncomfortable, everyone else would be uncomfortable, and it would unpick all my hard work. Years later, I've done it so much, that I actually enjoy public speaking. I've done creative pitches, panel talks, podcasts, a talk at The Marketing Meetup (thanks James Sandbrook) and most recently, I did a reading at my sister's wedding 🥲 And guess what... feedback tells me I'm pretty good at it! I still get nervous, of course, but I see each opportunity as a great challenge and I get heaps of satisfaction from it. I hope this helps anyone who is struggling with public speaking. Just remember... if you can appear confident, everyone else will be confident in you 🏆 (even if you're dying inside!) And if anyone needs a speaker - creative, female creative or students/grads - I'd love to keep getting better so, you know where I am... #creative #brand #people #publicspeaking

What a fantastic post. I am a member of the bright red face club and It can be infuriating and something I am trying to overcome/live with at the moment as I am training to be a Pilates Teacher. Is it something that still creeps up every now and again or does it improve with practice and experience?
