An election to choose a new supreme court judge in the northern US state of Wisconsin wouldn't usually make much noise. But when the world's richest man took an interest in the race, people began to notice, and protests on March 30 drew crowds. Elon Musk said Sunday that the “entire destiny” of humanity could be impacted by the upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court race on Tuesday.

Musk made the comments during a rally in Green Bay where he urged attendees to show up and vote for conservative judicial candidate Brad Schimel. Schimel is running against liberal Judge Susan Crawford in a race that will determine the ideological slant of the court.

“What’s happening on Tuesday is a vote for which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives. That is why it is so significant. And whichever party controls the House, to a significant degree controls the country, which then steers the course of Western Civilization,” Musk said, adding that he thought the “entire destiny of humanity” could be impacted by the race.

Democrats believe that if Crawford wins on Tuesday, they will be able to get the Supreme Court to order maps more favorable to their party and get rid of two Republican seats. Musk said that the work of the Trump administration to reform the government would be seriously hindered if Republicans lost the House.

Musk, who walked out on stage wearing a cheesehead to a cheering crowd, said that the odds were currently stacked against Schimel, saying that conservatives were going to have to pull a rabbit out of the hat to win.

“The single biggest challenge, I think, is actually just making people aware that there is this very important election. And its both very important election for Judge Schimel as well as deciding on adding voter ID to the Wisconsin constitution, which is very, very important,” Musk said.

Musk also announced that two Wisconsin residents, Nicholas Jacobs and Ekaterina Diestler, would be awarded $1 million after they signed a petition to stop activists judges. Musk said the purpose of the checks was “to get attention” and said that it had caused the “legacy media to lose their minds.”

The Supreme Court on Sunday declined to rule on a lawsuit from Democrat state Attorney General Josh Kaul seeking to block the payments.

Musk announced another initiative at the rally that would pay people $20 for every photo they submit of a Wisconsin resident with a picture of Brad Schimel in one hand and a thumbs up in the other.

Musk was joined at the rally by GOP Senator Ron Johnson and Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy.

“We need to return our Supreme Court to one that has justices and judges. And by that I mean people who will apply the law, not alter it,” Johnson said. “We’re not looking for super legislators.”

Johnson said that Crawford would be likely to vote overturn Act 10, a Republican-backed measure that brought dramatic reforms to government labor unions, and to redistrict Republican congressional districts.

A record-breaking $90 million has reportedly been poured into the race, pitting leftist megadonors like George Soros and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker against Musk, whose America PAC has been very active in the race. The spending total broke the previously-held record for most expensive state judicial race, when liberals first flipped control of the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 2023.
