Do you subscribe to newsletters? Here's a radical idea... Respond to them 😆 Whoever sent it *wants* to hear from you. You will make their day by responding. And it can help you foster new connections with smart people, too! I once heard a newsletter writer who's good at marketing (looking at you, Chenell Basilio) say she responds to other people's newsletters as a way of marketing her own. She writes an authentic note about why she enjoys reading that particular newsletter, and includes the sign-up link for her newsletter in her email signature. Best case scenario, they notice what you're up to and become a reader, and maybe even an evangelist for your business down the line. Worst case scenario, you've brightened someone's day by showing some gratitude for all the free content they've sent you.

Can you respond directly to Substacks? Does that email actually go anywhere?

Don’t give away my secrets 🤫

I remember responding to The Hustle early days, when they said the Super Bowl was the biggest sporting event in the world even though it's the FIFA World Cup.. the next day they corrected it saying they got thousands of angry Europeans replying to that email 😂 Anyways, I should send more gratitude responses like you mentioned, great idea!

Response rates are making all the difference. Newsletters with 50K followers may very well get 2-3 replies per email - or zero at times. Popping up is trivial!

I give Brian Piper my two cents about the content in his newsletter often. Until now, he’s always responded. 😁

Oh yes, I do this EVERY time. Helps build connection. And I feel like we both always get so much more out of the interaction. I remember hearing this from Chenell, as well :)

Exactly! Every creator likes to get feedback from his audience. That way they know they are doing a good job, and it gives them a kick to keep going!

This us currently on one of my to-do lists. I take it it's a great way to connect with another person that's into the same things as you! Win-win.
