🌟 Career Update 🌟 After an incredible journey spanning 5 and a half years, I recently bid farewell to Malala Fund. Serving as the Director of National and Regional Advocacy has been an absolute privilege. Working closely with our local grantees and partners, particularly the remarkable young women driving change, and alongside two inspiring co-founders, #Malala and Ziauddin Yousafzai, has been immensely fulfilling. Throughout my time, I've had the opportunity to support activists in delivering impactful advocacy at both the national and global levels. Witnessing how we facilitated flexible grants, empowering these activists to amplify their voices on a worldwide stage, was truly inspiring. However, the pinnacle of my experience at Malala Fund was undeniably the collaborative efforts with an extraordinary team of individuals dedicated to advancing the mission towards a world where every girl can learn and lead. Excitingly, I'm thrilled to announce my new role as the Director of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns at Project Everyone. For those unfamiliar, Project Everyone is a not-for-profit creative communications agency co-founded by the visionary filmmaker Richard Curtis, Gail Gallie and Kate Garvey. We seek to put the power of great communication behind the #GlobalGoals. Stepping into this role at Project Everyone couldn't come at a more opportune moment, as we hit the halfway mark of the Global Goals. My focus will be on championing 'gamechangers'- policy initiatives and innovations poised to catalyse exponential progress across all the Goals. Collaborating with our talented creative team, I'm eager to spearhead campaigns that foster accountability for the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals by delivering uncomplicated communication of complex ideas. I'm beyond thrilled to embark on this new chapter and look forward to leveraging my experience to drive meaningful change alongside an inspiring team at Project Everyone. 🌟 Huge gratitude to The Advocacy Team for orchestrating such a phenomenal event on an often overlooked yet crucial topic. With 73% of women expressing fear over self-promotion at work, discussions like these are vital. What better way to honour #InternationalWomensDay2024 than by delving into personal journeys of self-advocacy in the #InternationalDevelopment sector? Here are my reflections on my own journey of self-advocacy: - Know your own worth. Every professional deserves roles and pay commensurate with their time, effort and expertise. Don’t ever think you’re too young or you don’t have enough years under your belt. Quality over quantity! - Don't be intimidated to advocate for promotions. You don’t need to meet 100% of the person specifications. If you do you’re probably overqualified. Growth happens outside comfort zones. - Prioritise respect over likeability. - Self-advocacy can be exhausting. Remember self-care amidst the challenges of self-advocacy. - Leading by example can inspire empowerment in others. - There are limits of self-advocacy, so make sure you cultivate a supportive network for confidence and to champion alongside you. If, like me, you are passionate about initiatives focused on empowering girls and young women, especially those that embrace innovative approaches and challenge the status quo, and are looking for an initiative to support this #WomenHistoryMonth, then look no further than the Global Girl Project. Global Girl Project is a small but mighty #feminist organisation doing amazing work, supporting girls in the hardest to reach communities in the majority world to become leaders and change-makers. What I love about the Global Girl Project is thier commitment to meeting girls where they are. They actively dismantle barriers to girls' participation in transformative leadership programmes, eliminating prerequisites like proficiency in English. This ensures that language is not a hindrance and that these programmes are inclusive, catering not only to those with more privilege but also to those who may face additional challenges. Global Girl Project unites girl leaders worldwide in a collective effort to cover 30,000 miles. That's why this years #GlobalGirlsRuntheWorld initiative aims to collectively move 30,000 miles to raise funds for their programmes. I've pledged to complete 30 runs this March to contribute. (And for those who know me well, you know how much I hate cardio!) Every donation, no matter how small, helps support their mission to train 795 girl leaders this year.
