The British Consulate General in Milan are part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Trade Strategic Relationship Manager in the Trade engineering team in DIT Milan. 

The successful candidate will strengthen and reinforce our Trade team in Italy, overseeing the in-market Strategic Relationship Management (SRM) approach. This would include the identification and classification of companies in the UK and Italy that require a SRM effort to export from the UK to Italy or to invest in the Italian market through an Overseas Direct Investment (ODI).

 The role-holder would form part of the existing trade team and work in collaboration with HQ, Sector Groups and ITAs in the UK, ensuring local SRM priorities align with the larger organisational context. The role-holder would look after the coordination and briefing in advance of VIP engagement at Post working with the relevant colleagues in London. They would capture and analyse strategic company data in order to track previous account activities, and to identify and ensure appropriate follow-up.

The successful candidate will help the Head of the Team to manage strategic relationships with key stakeholders in cross-sectors including finance, marine, engineering, energy, technology, security and defence, civil aviation, smart cities, ho.re.ca and packaging, food and drink, and significant opportunities to support the Technology and Clean Growth campaigns.

The role-holder will also work with UK companies to overcome barriers to trade, leveraging relationships with government and regulators and ensure alignment with DIT country and European strategies, with a focus on quality and delivery of outcomes related to COP26 and to support the Technology and Clean Growth European export campaigns.

As part of a wider Europe Regional DIT team, the job holder will report to the Head of Trade Engineering Unit to assist with the implementation of DIT trade strategy in Italy and with the coordination of the Department of international Trade in Head Office. This will be a collaborative and flexible role, allocated to cross-sector work on key projects across the DIT Italy trade team requiring priority attention.

This flexible role will focus on support for UK exporters adapting to the UK-EU Future Economic Relationship and post-Covid economic recovery, and on new opportunities arising from the future trading relationship with Italy. The successful candidate will hold responsibility for identifying and taking forward new strategic opportunities for export growth, as well as any future market access barriers facing UK exporters to Italy, and working to address these in collaboration with the existing Trade Policy Officer.

The role-holder would form part of the existing Trade team in Italy and work in collaboration with UK-based Sector Teams and the Europe-wide Communications Team, ensuring local trade priorities align with the larger organisational context. Members of the team are experienced and highly motivated to train and coach new colleagues in the team to deliver on their potential to reach common objectives and personal ambitions.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Delivery: Introduction and implementation of a robust and a future-proof strategic relationship management methodology in Italy, build on the overall SRM practice outlined by DIT HQ and working in parallel with similar procedures established in other UK government organisations.

 

  • Resources: Propose, discuss, agree and implement the SRM plans for each selected company in close cooperation with the existing trade team at Post taking personal initiative, securing buy-in and ensuring cooperation with all relevant colleagues.

 

  • Capture: Ensuring local SRM data, knowledge, activities and plans are captured and presented using the DIT SRM templates and Data Hub, while sharing those with the relevant account team and key stakeholders; and kept updates at any time.

 

  • Strategy: Using all means available to successfully deliver export projects incl. cooperation with Ambassadors, VIP contacts, key stakeholders, HQ/Post colleagues and policy teams for efficient account management. Identify, suggest, plan and deliver strategic activities engaging the client throughout the ‘life’ of the account plan. Establish procedures for agreement of selection criteria for SRM in Italy.

 

  • Communication: As required by the trade team, build solid rapport with key clients in order to increase their interest in information about UK market solutions, policy and regulatory changes. Create a thorough understanding of the local team’s client requirements; enabling anticipation of specific client requests and establishment of trust and loyalty in the relationship.

 

  • Synergies: Operational alignment with overall DIT SRM Strategy & regional European initiates and actions where cross border cooperation can maximise opportunities & results for the UK economy. Active and constructive engagement in regional activities to identify best SRM practice and increase synergies for UK promotional activity and impact.

 

  • Personal: Demonstrate personal ambition for DIT’s trade team including the ability to maximise resource, introduce innovative ideas, demonstrate creative thinking and enhance capabilities leading to increased performance and effectiveness.

 

  • Corporate – contribute to cross-cutting Embassy activities. Actively engage in corporate activities and initiatives in the Italy Network.

This is a full-time temporary position with a contract of 11 months with possibility of renewal by mutual consent, graded B3(L) according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro 2.929,00 . The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hrs per week Monday to Friday 09.00 – 17.00.

The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a 4 month probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Consulate General are subject to Italian income tax (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

 The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
