This course is incredibly helpful and inspiring. Tom is an excellent teacher and I gained a ton of invaluable knowledge in just a few hours. HIGHLY RECOMMEND, even if you've written features before.

I have been working in Film and Tv for 18 years as a costumer, writing scripts for 10 years (and reading them even longer!) and I never come across a more succinctly organized and easy to follow breakdown of structure than Tom's course. It brought out nuanced story points I have never heard emphasized in in structure breakdowns before and he does it all with the most contagious smile and encouraging style I've ever encountered. Before Tom's class, my WIP was bogged down with too many details. Tom breaks the essential points of a feature in to a 4-Act Structure that can work in any genre. I'm thrilled to refer to this as the road map for my next revision.

I've studied screenwriting at two of the most prestigious film schools in the country, and I'm not exaggerating when I say I got more out of a couple of months with Tom than I did in my combined six years of university classes.  Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) told me that he has a career in Hollywood because he understands what's supposed to happen in the second act of a movie, and I wasn't at all surprised when he told me his secret because it's the same thing I learned from Tom. 

My favorite thing about Tom's course is how straightforward it is. There's a tendency to overthink or underthink a lot of elements in screenwriting, but Tom's Mastering Structure is practical and actionable. Before I took Tom’s class, writing a screenplay seemed daunting. I had read the most popular how-to books and had started the writing process, but it was incredibly slow-going, and I got easily overwhelmed. The structure Tom teaches is clear and easy to follow, but it still leaves plenty of room to tell your own story in your own way. Tom is a passionate & capable writer AND teacher. It's rare that you find someone who has both of those skill sets. When he lectures or workshops your material with you, it's obvious that he's engaged and interested in your characters, your story, your jokes, everything. I've taken a hell of a lot of screenwriting classes, not to mention other kinds of writing classes (poetry, fiction, sketch, whatever), and Tom is by far one of the best teachers I've had. Plus, he's heavily invested in the UCB community, so he gets game and can speak to scenes with that vocabulary. So even if your creative experience has been limited in the past to sketch / improv, he can speak to you in a way that you'll understand.

Before taking Tom Vaughn's class, I would sit down and write and just be overwhelmed at the task at hand. And, 20 pages in I would lose steam and momentum and just not know where to go. I'm working slowly through story and plot. Tom has broken the typical, long-journey nightmare called ACT 2 into four, smaller, managable ACT 2s; this makes ACT 2 doable and not the long, barren wasteland it usually ends up being. Over the years I’ve had a fair amount of experience with screenwriting books and courses, including two weekends-long Save The Cat sessions. There are no words for how fantastic and life-changing Tom's screenwriting courses have been. Without them, I don't think I would have ever made the leap to becoming a professional screenwriter. As a documentary editor, I found Tom's course on story and plot incredibly helpful. Though it’s primarily aimed at fiction writers, his insights are just as useful for non-fiction work, helping me identify core story beats hidden within hours of interviews and make them stronger.

What can I say about this course? Aside from my writing in itself, taking the Mastering Structure course is one of the great joys I've experienced in my creative pursuits. I just finished Tom’s course on structure, and WOW! Does this ever help! I've read many screenwriting books before but Tom’s modules demystify so much as he breaks it all down into scenes and sequences. Brilliant!

Tom's class is very easy to grasp. All the terms are defined and explained in a clear method. The presentation is also easy to follow. Some of the other courses I have taken were not a clearly presented leaving me to look up definitions of things like thematic question, etc. He's taken the anxiety out of the process for me and you can't put a price on that.

Tom Vaughan's Mastering Structure and Idea to Outline classes are probably the best I've taken (and his Perfecting the Logline class is great too). I wish I could say something negative about them, so this didn't sound like an ad, but I got nothing.

I bought the bundle of "Mastering Structure," "Idea to Outline," and "Perfecting the Logline." I thought these courses were EXCELLENT. I am lucky enough to have been employed as a professional TV writer for a few years now, but I have not (yet) had the same success on the feature film side of the business. A friend of mine had sent me a social media post of Tom's about introducing characters, and I immediately started using the advice because I thought it was so good. When I first started screenwriting, I had zero idea what I was doing. I knew there were three acts, but I didn't know anything else. Tom is a great teacher. He's genuine, deeply knowledgeable and truly teaching for the student to learn (not for ego or self-gratification). Tom's course is easily the best screenwriting course I have taken. I have never had a course that has been so easy to understand and didn't complicate things by using obscure jargon! I'm no professional screenwriter (as badly as I want to be one) but have dabbled for years. Every time I sat down and wrote my outline prior to my first draft though, it was all just a guessing game. There was no real rhyme or reason to what I wrote other than going on instinct and feeling. That was until I discovered Tom Vaughan's excellent story structure course. Having watched all the videos I've learned so much about what needs to happen when in order to tell a great story with an arc, stakes and a satisfying conclusion. Even if this class sounds daunting, I'd easily recommend it to any aspiring screenwriter. Tom's bag of tricks will easily give you a leg up on the competition (which is the only reason I'd be hesitant to suggest to others- I don't want everyone else to know these invaluable trade secrets!).

Before taking Mastering Structure I was stumped about how to make a promising script into one that fulfills its potential. Now I feel as if I have concrete questions to ask myself that will break me out of this aggravating paralysis. I know better how to analyze the structure and pinpoint exactly what needs to be stronger. I am also less intimidated by the idea of getting the next script going. It will be fun to start with the answers Tom talks about, rather than backfilling. This is altogether an instructive experience and I'm looking forward to learning more and getting better at this.

I am about half way through this course and am treasuring each chapter. Before starting this course I had played with the idea of writing a screenplay, but had no idea how to begin. I wasted so much time trying to reinvent the wheel and my wheels just kept spinning. So far he has given me an idea of the structure i should use and the ideas are slapping me upside the head wanting to be written.

Before Mastering Structure, I had read many books on screenwriting but never truly absorbed the lessons. Tom's course had been informative, straightforward and and most importantly simple to understand. I look forward to watching Tom's other courses and implementing his lessons in my own work.

I took Mastering Structure and it was great! Before the course, I was swimming in different methodologies (Save the Cat!, Gotham Writers Workshop lessons, and lessons from Syd Field and Robert McKee). Tom helped synthesize, combine, and simplify all of those ideas and concepts into a straightforward, but detailed understanding of how story works. I highly recommend it.

I took Tom's Mastering Structure course and am so glad that I did. Before taking this course I had taken screenwriting courses in college, read a few screenwriting books, and knew general structure, but this was one of the most helpful things I've done for my writing career. The way that he's broken down the structure into bite-sized pieces helps make writing a feature seem less daunting and doable. Ever since I got more serious about screenwriting I've asked my wife to read my screenplays, and since this course she's said that my writing has gotten so much better and has a good flow to it. And trust me, I definitely can tell when she's excited or bored by it. I would highly recommend this course to any writer.

I took Tom Vaughan's Mastering Structure course and it was a revelation for my screenwriting. Before Tom's course I was focused mainly on plot when writing a script. After Tom's course I understood that a great script is built on a series of scenes and sequences in a well-defined structure to enhance dramatic momentum and emotional resonance. His course is a game changer for any screenwriter looking to transform their writing. I look forward to continuing to explore his other courses.

I write graphic novels, which share some similarities in format to Screenplays. But the structure is basically the same. Before Tom's class, I had always struggled with breaking down movies or books I loved - specifically with the Inciting Incident for some reason. I got confused about some exciting action and what was actually the inciting incident. After Tom's course, the whole thing (writing, learning, breaking down structure) seems much less intimidating. I really recommend it to any kind of writer. There is a way that Tom explains things that just make it easier to understand. The modules are short, but packed with so many simple tools and details. I really learned a lot. I've been writing for about 7 years now, I've taken courses and workshops and ready plenty of how to books, but this is the one that I would truly recommend (and take again!).

I just completed Tom's Mastering Structure course and I highly recommend it! The way Tom breaks down story structure is easy to follow. He takes concepts that we continually hear about in the screenwriting world and explains them in an easy to understand way. I particularly like how he regularly leverages popular movies to give real examples of what he is teaching. I finished this course feeling inspired with several new "tools" to bring back to my story and help move it forward in a meaningful way.

After completing 'Mastering Structure' I was left thinking...man, I wish I viewed things like this before. The information was so clearly laid out, explained, not just talked about, and even provided examples. And yes, handouts! I love some good handouts! But seriously, this course opened something inside myself that now gives me a new perspective on screenplay structure. Take the course. You'll see. Scenes and sequences...terrific. The 4 act structure...again, outstanding. But also, a transparent explanation of all the other things that go into it. Sure, I've heard these terms before, but never, and I mean never have I had the "why" explained. Why they are there, and the "how" they work and compliment each other. Even has a section about breaking down a movie so you can 'see' all these ideas working, be able to pinpoint them, and man, that was an eye-opening exercise. Look, I don't even know what else to say, except, I do not feel stuck any longer. I know what to do. More importantly how and why to do it. Tom...Tom...Tom...you have truly outdone yourself.

I took all three courses (Logline, Mastering Structure and Idea to Outline) in rapid succession. They are hands down, the best thing I have done for my writing *ever*. I so wish I'd come across the courses years ago. It would have saved me a lot of heartache trying to understand the story I've been trying to tell and why it just wouldn't work. The road is clear now. A million thank yous from the other side of the big pond!

I got a producer attached to the first script I wrote after taking these courses. The courses were a present a bought for myself last year, and it’s the best gift I’ve ever been given. Thanks so much to Tom for his knowledge and wisdom.

I'm in the middle of Tom's "Mastering Structure" course. It's a step-by-step tutorial on the basics of screenplay writing and development, but Tom adds so much more! You'll learn basic outlines, but Tom gives examples that are easy to follow and implement along with his expertise of decades of writing and teaching. It's the best thing I've done for myself to further my screenwriting career!
