As always, the poems of Shel Silverstein are wonderful word play and the illustrations are a pure delight.

The first one is just simply beautiful:

"Years from Now"
Although I cannot see your face
As you flip through these poems awhile,
Somewhere from some far-off place
I hear you laughing - and I smile.

RIP

There really is a Dead Poets Society, and Shel Silverstein must be the president. Imagine my delight (and my goosebumps) when I learned that he had put out another book of poetry and pictures just for me---FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE!

I don't want to share too much, because the joy of reading Shel's poems is in the surprise you get when you hit the best lines. You also really need the artwork to fully appreciate the poems.
Here's the first poem in the book:

YEARS FROM NOW

Although I cannot see your face
As you flip these poems awhile,
Somewhere from some far-off place
I hear you laughing---and I smile.

Thanks, Shel. I hear you laughing, too.

So many poems to LOVE! One of my faves:

DON'T CHANGE ON MY ACCOUNT
If you're sloppy, that's just fine.
If you're moody, I won't mind.
If you're fat, that's fine with me.
If you're skinny, let it be.
If you're bossy, that's all right.
If you're nasty, I won't fight.
If you're rough, well that's just you.
If you're mean, that's all right too.
Whatever you are is all okay.
I don't like you anyway.

Ha! He was so funny :) There are a few people I'd love to send this poem to!

Ava is reading this delightfully by herself and with us at night. As soon as I handed it to her, she sat down and read it for 20 minutes, laughing every few pages. It is wonderful. Shel Silverstein was a genius. He is able to tap into the heart of the child in all of us in such a unique way. Add this to your collection!

It was a good poetry book, and I am not a huge fan of poetry. I wish that this book had a plot and a story through the book. I did think that the stories where cute and funny and I thought the last one was sad it was called “WHEN I AM GONE”. I think Shel Silverstein did a great job with the poems and drawings.

“WHEN I AM GONE
When I am gone what will you do?
Who will write and draw for you?
Someone smarter - someone new?
Some one better - maybe YOU!”

I grew up with these books. I've been slowly re-reading them with my own kids, and this is the fourth of Silverstein's books we've read together. The quality and style of Silverstein's work never really changes, and it doesn't matter, because his work is so charming, so warm, so funny, and at times so insightful, that we adore every moment that we read these poems together. I've been reading them with my sons for years, but this is the first Silverstein book I've also read with my daughter, and it was as fun for her as it was for me when I was a kid.

Anyone who follows me on Twitter knows that I agonized about how to rate this book. I love Shel Silverstein and before this book I would have said "and everything he writes"; however, I cannot say that any more. Every Thing On It was such a mish-mash of poems. I think that Shel may not have put him in his other anthologies because he knew that they did not work. Some as fantastic, carefree and fun as I remember Shel, but others were not. Some were thought provoking. Some were depressing. Others were just plain weird. And I did not like the depressing and weird ones. Maybe in a different context- an adult poetry book where you are expecting Shel's darker side, but not in a book that is sitting right along side his other fun-loving children's anthologies. But then how do you rate something like this? There were some poems that were definitely a 1 star for me, more that were 2, even more that were 3, some that were 4 and some that were 5. So, I went with a 3. Average. But this 3 star, does not represent all of the debating that went on in my head very well.

I've been a fan of Shel Silverstein since my early days of reading. I remember reading Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, and Falling Up! When I received a copy of Everything On It for review I was instantly taken back to those days in elementary school where my view of poetry expanded beyond the world of rhyming poems. I remember being fascinated by the worlds he created in a just few simple lines.

As an adult reading the poems in Every Thing On It, I was still fascinated! I giggled just like I did as a small girl. I marked my favorites and read them over and over again.

Two poems stood out to me in this book. The Clock Man, which you might not appreciate as much as a child, but understand all to well as an adult! Also, Happy Ending. Which I’m going to share below.

Happy Ending? by Shel Silverstein

“There are no happy endings.
Endings are the saddest part,
So just give me a happy middle
And a very happy start.”

A wonderful book of poems for children and adults alike! I’ll never be to old to read Shel Silverstein!

I loved Shel Silverstein as a kid, particularly Where the Sidewalk Ends. I read it over and over. This new, posthumous collection is every bit as whimsical, funny, gross, and touching as I hoped it would be. It has a little bit of everything, and left me smiling, laughing, and even with some goosebumps. Grown-ups who loved Silverstein as kids will love this one too, and hopefully a new generation will become fans as well.

My parents purchased The Sidewalk Ends for me in second grade. I still have my copy, with my name lettered inside the front copy. The book is basically falling apart, it has been read and reread so many times. It is in my classroom library now so my students can see what it looks like when a book is loved. I will be forever grateful for a new volume in my Silverstein collection, made all the more special because it seemed impossible. And this one is destined to be as special to a new generation as The Sidewalk Ends was to mine. My son, 9, grabbed it tonight and howled with delight at several poems sprinkled throughout. I love the first one...

And from there, the book is off and doesn't look back. Beautiful.

Oh, how I enjoyed Shel Silverstein's "Every thing On It"! The poems and drawings were thought-provoking, memorable, funny and heart-felt with 'bigly' lessons learned in Silverstein's amazing word play for curious kids and adults alike!

“She had blue skin,

And so did he.

He kept it hid

And so did she.

They searched for blue

Their whole life through,

Then passed right by-

And never knew.”

and

“Underneath my outside face

There’s a face that none can see.

A little less smiley,

A little less sure,

But a whole lot more like me.”

and then

“There are no happy endings.

Endings are the saddest part,

So just give me a happy middle

And a very happy start.”

I can't believe there's going to be a new Shel Silverstein collection of never-before-published poems! I loved his books so much as a kid, and was so sad when he died.

UPDATE:

This is kind of impossible to rate, because I am obviously not the target demographic for these books anymore. As a kid, I would have loved this just as much as the other three, but reading it now gave me a few mild chuckles and smiles. Overall though, I was left with a nice peaceful feeling of being back with these ridiculous poems, and I am glad I read this.

Shel Silverstein really did take the art of writing poetry for kids to new heights, didn't he? I've never read anything else like this book. Packed with nearly two hundred poems of varying length, style and attitude, Every Thing On It is a masterful piece of pithy thought and comedic pathos, crafted beautifully and without any agenda other than providing the best possible literature for young readers. Most of the poems can be read in straightforward appreciation for the humor that they contain, but there's often a deeper level of truth, as well, that one can benefit from if one is willing to ponder what's being said for a few moments longer. As Dr. Seuss did so effectively for so many years, Shel Silverstein condenses profound words into short, rhyming verses and leaves it up to the readers how deeply they want to dive into them, how far they want to delve into the thoughts being presented. But what will really leave a lasting impression on the minds of readers is how the plethora of poems that are Every Thing On It is framed, with one poem at the beginning and one at the end that feel different from all the others. In reading the creative outpouring of one of the most beloved children's authors of the twentieth century, an author who had passed away by the time this book went into posthumous publication in 2011, these first and last poems are a poignant goodbye to the children who have read his books for so many years, providing their listening ears for the wise, wacky and wonderful verse that the "spider" never stopped weaving inside Shel Silverstein's head. And so these beginning and end pieces are easily the most emotional moments of the entire book, likely to bring readers to tears before they've even turned page one, and then bringing them back to that same place again just as they finish the book. It's a lighthearted tug on the emotions, though, designed to bring forth laughter even through the tears, just as it's always been with Shel Silverstein.

There are so many terrific poems in this book that I hardly know where to begin in discussing them. Take Masks, for example:

“She had blue skin,
And so did he.
He kept it hid.
And so did she.
They searched for blue
Their whole life through,
Then passed right by―
and never knew.”

It's such a simple poem, not seeming to be especially elegant, yet it powerfully illustrates the way that we so often have no clue about the pain of those in our lives because they keep it hidden, just as we do. But what would happen if we didn't wear masks to cover our pain, and just let it be seen by our friends and family? I don't really know. I do know, however, that there are many situations in which two people in pain could help each other out tremendously, if only they'd let each other know how much they're hurting. I suppose we just have to learn to open up to the right people, those who can actually help us, and whom we can be there for in return. Sharing one's sadness with another person can be a beautiful, encouraging experience, if it's the right person.

Then, as every good writer knows:

"There are no happy endings.
Endings are the saddest part,
So just give me a happy middle
And a very happy start.”

It may be true that there's no such thing as a happy ending in real life, that every happy ending is simply the middle of a story that is still continuing, the person living it sure to experience additional happy moments as well as sad ones. As long as we have some happiness to balance out the sadness along the way, though, it's hard to expect much more than that. It's not easy to hold the high note of a real happy moment for very long; life moves on and forward, continuing to change and run the gamut from high to low as those changes occur, but never remaining static for very long. Life, by its very nature, has to move; when it stops moving, that's when life has ended. The happy moments along the way, fleeting as they may be, can still be cherished as they come, and remembered for all that they were even long after they're gone.

The Yesees and Noees poem has some important words for us all:

“The Yesees said yes to anything
That anyone suggested.
The Noees said no to everything
Unless it was proven and tested.
So the Yesees all died of much too much
And the Noees all died of fright,
But somehow I think the Thinkforyourselfees
All came out all right.”

So many books for juvenile and young-adult readers issue stirring challenges to stand up against the voices in society that would persuade us as individuals not to think for ourselves, to leave the philosophical heavy lifting to political leaders and academic professors. How can one change the world without forming intelligent, cohesive, practical opinions, and how can one form such opinions without doing a lot of critical thinking? Few books, however, are more convincing in their treatment on the subject than Shel Silverstein is in the above poem, short and direct and effectively comical all at the same time. I sure don't ever want to become a Yesee or a Noee! I'm a Thinkforyourselfee all the way!

Here's another subtle piece, which speaks to the danger of going through life without really doing anything significant, if one isn't careful to prevent that from happening:

"First he was born,
And then he was warned,
And then he was taught how to swim,
And then he was married,
And then he was buried,
And that's all that happened to him."

It's so easy to fall through the cracks every step of the way in life, to become locked into a routine and not realize how the years have drifted by until one looks up and finally sees how much time has been lost. There's so much that life offers, though, things we couldn't have even realistically imagined for ourselves when we were younger. How can we just let all that potential...get away from us?

The world of juvenile literature, especially poetry, really misses Shel Silverstein. I've never come across another kids' poet better able to express himself clearly in verse, create original, enjoyable humor and touch the hearts of so many as Shel Silverstein did his entire life. I love Every Thing On It, not just because it's a smart, well-written, emotionally affecting book, but because it reminds us what we had in Shel Silverstein, the gift that he was to us all and the incalculable contribution that his writing and illustrating has made to the field of juvenile literature. It's the last poem of the book that says it best, in Shel Silverstein's own words, as we say so long to a brilliant writer who clearly loved kids just as much as they love him.

"When I am gone what will you do?
Who will write and draw for you?
Someone smarter―someone new?
Someone better―maybe YOU!"

Everything on it was a fun book of poems that were all funny and had good humor. I liked the randomness of the poems and how they all just fit together into this really funny short book.
