The asylum system that our clients face is extremely disempowering and dehumanising. Throughout their procedure and stay in the camps they are treated as numbers and the dehumanised entity of 'asylum seeker'. With our holistic and human centric approach, we recognise every client as an individual with their own story, needs, capacity and dreams. We offer them dignified and safe spaces where they can engage in learning and conversations about their rights and procedure, which empowers them take back some of the agency and humanity that is so violently taken away from them.

On International Women’s Day, we want to draw attention to the ways in which migration is a gendered process in which women and girls are at disproportionately higher risk of sexual and gender-based violence. In Greece, worrying shortcomings in the Greek authorities' response to sexual and gender-based violence remain and have still not been resolved, which has a harmful impact on the survivors' well-being and prevents them from receiving adequate support. JOIN US OR SHARE WTH YOUR NETWORK The number of people arriving to Lesvos in search of safety continues to be high. Most people have no access to any form of legal information or aid before their interview, creating serious barriers in accessing their fundamental rights. Besides people's well-being is negatively affected by the stress and anxiety around their procedures. With our project on Lesvos we seek to empower people throughout their procedure, and we are looking for volunteer Legal Officers to join us as soon as possible to help us increase the number of people we reach! THRILLING NEWS! Fenix is an Ockenden Prize Finalist! We are overjoyed and deeply honoured to share that our ground breaking Capacity Bridging and Community Engagement project has been shortlisted as one of the 10 finalists for the Ockenden International Prize of 2024! Ockenden seeks to support and highlight organisations that work directly with refugees and displaced people to advance self-reliance. With this project, we work towards the legal empowerment of people who seek asylum. We create spaces for sharing and learning, where people can engage in meaningful conversations about their rights, procedure and challenges they face. This equips them with the confidence and tools to advocate for themselves throughout their asylum procedure, a crucial step towards claiming their rights. Being a finalist for this prize means the world to us, as it validates our mission and recognises our work! https://lnkd.in/eBAqDpuB

The age is a fundamental part of the child’s identity, and wrongfully registering children as adults infringes on the fundamental rights of children. Between 2020 and 2023, different practices were observed, but in all moments, severe procedural infringements were observed; nonetheless all inevitably led to violations of the fundamental rights of minors. To learn more about the registration of minors and the age assessment process, check out our latest report in the link below 👇 https://lnkd.in/di4-EjsB

This week, 16 humanitarians are standing trial on Lesvos. The trial relates to their work in providing rescue services to people seeking international protection. The case is part of a bigger trend in the European Union, where persecution of humanitarian work is used as a means to discourage solidarity. In moments where humanity is on trial, the act of protecting the most vulnerable in our society should never be a crime. The courage displayed by those standing for the rights and lives of people seeking asylum should be celebrated, not prosecuted. In the face of the trial of the 16 humanitarians, let us remember that extending compassion to those seeking safety is not a crime — it’s a fundamental act of humanity. It is also a legal obligation, one that the government now seeking a conviction, has failed once and again to fulfil.
