In the aftermath of the #SVB collapse, this lesson has stayed on my mind. . . . Effective communication during a crisis is critical in shaping the possible outcomes of the situation. What we saw with SVB was a breakdown in communication that lead to confusion, panic, distrust and ultimately, a classic bank run. In today's world where news travels quickly, people rely on the information they receive from various sources, including press releases, social media etc. When a company like SVB issues a press release that is unclear and incoherent (try reading it), it can quickly trigger a chain reaction and drive down investor confidence. For SVB, that meant the collapse of its most prominent signalling tool — its stock price. What happened exactly? SVB issued a press release stating that it was rushing to raise cash, which spooked its investors and depositors. In reality, SVB had announced a $2.25 billion balance sheet bolstering plan to offset losses (-$1.8B) on its Treasury and mortgage-backed securities portfolios due to rising interest rates, which should have been communicated more effectively to prevent investor panic. Well, we all know how that story ended. Effective communication is not just an opportunity to build trust and credibility with the public/stakeholders, it may in fact be the saving grace for survival during a crisis. Childhood lessons do come in handy: The way we communicate makes all the difference.
