More and more international schools are making the transition to Humanities and teaching Social Studies through C3 and inquiry. But it can be tricky to determine the best way to integrate reading, writing, and social studies content and skills. In this course, we will explore:

  • the basics of C3 and the Inquiry Design Model for social studies
  • ways to approach responsive literacy instruction through inquiry
  • ways to frame an integrated Humanities curriculum and model
  • systems and resources to support your planning 


This course is designed for ELA, Social Studies, and Humanities teachers in Grades 5-10 who want to reimagine or refine their curriculum and instruction.

Facilitators

Jenny Killion

Jenny Killion is an experienced teacher, K–12 instructional coach, and literacy consultant. She has worked at the American School of Barcelona for over a decade as an elementary, middle school, and most recently as an IB DP teacher and HS Instructional Coach. She has extensive experience working with teachers from a variety of international schools on implementing Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop, developing integrated curriculum, connecting instruction across languages, and literacy coaching, as well as the K–8 Teachers College Reading and Writing Units of Study. Jenny is passionate about creating space for student voice and choice in the curriculum and classroom as well as supporting teachers in their instruction.

Matt Bornstein-Grove

Matt is an instructional coach, social studies teacher, and educational consultant with expertise in facilitating adult and student learning. His interest in inquiry based education drives his work with teachers and schools as they make the shift toward an inquiry and concept driven approach to social studies teaching and learning. Matt engages in collaborative planning and goal setting with school leaders and teachers to design a specific and contextually appropriate partnership plan. Partnership support options are varied, and include the facilitation of professional learning, strategic planning, curriculum review, and one on one or small group coaching. Matt has worked at the International School of Kuala Lumpur and the American School of Dubai, as well as public schools in the United States. He currently lives in Washington State.
