Street vendors in Dakar are fighting back against a surge in evictions and organizing towards a solution. ✊🏿 Dakar’s police evicted around 3,000 street vendors from the Petersen Market in March 2023. Many case studies conducted by WIEGO have shown that forced evictions are counterproductive, yet authorities insist on this practice. In the case of last year’s evictions in Dakar, the street vendors have organized: they created a platform to weigh in on decisions and have identified plots of land for sale where they could continue working. In the midst of conflict, climate change and cost-of-living pressures, the need for collective organizing and action for systemic change is clear. As domestic workers, home-based workers, street and market vendors, and waste pickers continue to build strong international networks and organize globally, WIEGO’s emphasis is shifting to workers’ education, building solidarity across these sectors and engaging in the big debates of our time around the world of work. WIEGO’s Annual Report showcases the role we will play within that context.
